My family is not religious, like, at all. In fact, we have openly discussed how silly we think organized religions are for as long as I can remember.

Nothing against the people who believe in that stuff, and it brings plenty of people peace and whatever, but (especially abrahamic ones) as a philosophy?

The general consensus is: 'Loldumb. Pass the shrimp?'

We celebrate Christian holidays because our culture is traditionally Christian, and who doesn't love food and get together?

Anywho, my oldest cousin (21) just converted to Islam this week. Why? Her boyfriend is Muslim. We didn't even know until we came for Easter brunch and she was all hijab'd up.

Her dad has been giving her he business for it, pretty strong looks like. They were always pretty close, and it seems like he took it hard and acted and and then she took his acting out hard.

It baffles me how people convert to religions. I can understand being born into that sh*t, but consciously converting to it as an adult? Lol.

Anywho, my toughest cousin (18) said to her:

'Don't you think it's stupid to convert to a religion that treats women like crap?'(I had a stern conversation with him on the drive home about tact)

And she got all into defence mode, and I said 'well, I don't really like any sort of philosophy that emphasizes modesty, and especially not when it's directed specifically at one gender'

An she just kid of vanished. Went upstairs, and stayed there they whole time.

And now we're all pissed because her leaving without even saying goodbye really upset my 78 year old grandma, and also we're kind of disdain her as a person for going and changing religions for a boyfriend, because that is pretty much the definition of weak sauce.

We should probably work on tolerance, but also everyone else should work on being less silly.

He's a marshmallow. You should have seen him when my grandpa was in the hospital.

wouldn't it make more sense? you don't know anything when you're born.

They might not, it's been like two years.

And he didn't used to be into it, he got more religion-y in the last six months, apparently.

It kind of looks like she was faced with losing a two year relationship or accepting Muhammed as the messiah.

Personally it would have been sayonara for me, but apparently I have a backbone and she doesn't.

This is really a fall from grace, too. Of the four of us cousins, she has always been the most together and successful.

We're not like, not accepting of her dumb choice since ya her right to make dumb choices as an adult, but I'm really hoping they do break up so we can tease her mercilessly about it.

It seems kind of wrong to get on her case for it when it's still something she's currently doing.

I don't get people that convert for their partner. as in I genuinely don't really understand what that means. do they just...decide to believe something else? how? does anyone really believe them?
1 yr ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 3/28/16 - 4:05:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you're buying into a religion when you're old enough to think, I have doubts about your mental capacities

That's basically what I wanted to say, but as usual I exaggerated for facetiousness.

How long has she been dating this guy?

If it's been a while and it looks like it's leading to marriage, ok, but if it's a new relationship, then yeah, that's kind of odd.

I'm sure it's more of a problem that it's Islam.

Well that's kind of a more plausible state to be accepting religion in, honestly.

If you're older you should know better.

Babies can't help it, they'll believe in anything! Case and point; Santa Clause.

That's why sucking them in when they're too young to fully understand the implications of the doctrine is so important.

1 yr ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 3/28/16 - 4:09:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
I mean, converting to a religion as an adult is one thing because even though *I* wouldn't, I get how someone could learn about a belief system as an adult and think "hey that lines up pretty well with what I believe in" and hey presto

but for your partner to be like "yeah you need to take this huge belief system and lifestyle and believe in all of it instead of whatever you currently believe" ? like everyone knows they're just using the words and wearing the clothes and pretending right? and if they AREN'T pretending then I have even more question

maybe they both decided to, we don't know that she did it for him.

2 years, and it's honestly not.

I mean it would probably be easier if it was Christianity because that's our cultural heritage, but apart from that it could be Judaisim or Buddhism or Sikism.

My grandfather feels upset as a Greek dude that's she's rejecting our culture.

Most of us she's dumb for the God bit in general.

I'm sure that's how she sees it, but she's always been the sort who was sucked into these causes really easily.

Girl's a vegetarian pro gun rights activist, ffs.

One of my buddies converted to islam to marry his wife (her parents request, she DGAF). He is the least observant muslim I've ever met, he drinks, he smokes, he sucks at ramadan, he doesn't attend mosque, he doesn't pray, doesn't keep halal, he wears shorts above his knees - but then, when offered pork he's like "nah, mate, that's haram"

So funny.

people are impressionable social animals and i swear that literally everyone does most of the stuff they do based on what other people they respect/love do, no matter how they justify or intellectualise it
there is nothing more natural than following your loved one into their sincerely held beliefs

No, my grandparents are actually pretty much super leftist. They want weed to be legal, public education overhauls, free university tuition, better mat and pat leave, free daycare, no religion in schools ever, obnoxious pro-life protesters to be arrested for harassment and hate speech, and more lenient immigration policy.

They're ashamed of her views on gun control too.

It's kinda funny.
