Every time I try to open a file on my computer, and I mean anything, a window pops up and says "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program, or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control file."

I cannot even open my command prompt or firefox. I'm thinking it might be a virus, but I am no computer genius.

Help me.

oh that's a nasty thing some viruses do.

if you don't already have it, I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Malware Bytes

Download and run both.

while they can find the offending virus, neither will fix the fact that the file association list Windows uses has been wiped.

I know, but she needs to do it anyway. It's a starting point.

Why anyone would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials is beyond me.. I have to deal with them to allow exceptions for the software programs my company produces and it takes an act of God to get them to finally freaking do anything about it.

I think I will try emo's suggestion. If it works I will be sure to post.

It's free, and works better than any other free antivirus (except for MalwareBytes), and god forbid, anything produced by Norton.

I downloaded it, but when I click on it in my download window, the same message still pops up : "this file does not have a program....."

I went to your link, and it gave me a list of links to click to fix file associations. I clicked on the one for Windows 7, and downloaded the download. But now in my downloads window, when I click on it the file associations issue still pops up.

Oh Norton is my favorite. About 4 times a year apparently they take our program out of their system as a trusted program and release and update that will quarantine everything.. They love generating about 40,000 calls into our support department.

I figured it out, I didn't see the list of fixes near the middle of the page. I got it all fixed up. You're my new hero.
