I don't think my boss ever considers the effort something will take me before he asks me to do it. He just asked me to create a report on our business based on each individual market, in addition to the total report I send out each week. I can't keep a local and total report constantly updated, which means I will have to go through a 2-hour (approximation) process each week to create the "localized" report that he will look at for 5 seconds before discarding. I need another vacation.

Thats why I choose to do nothing but sit on my ass all day at work.

that's so unfair!

you should tell him that he f*cking sucks
or you know, at least let him know that he is stressing you out.

i think a lot of it is that he doesn't even realize how much extra time these projects are taking you!

Just make sure he understands how loing it does really take you. He may deecide the benefits of the report are outweighed by the time on your schedule consumed.

On the other hand, like many of us, you're here goofing off, so maybe he feels you have time on your hands.

I wouldn't mind if I had software that could do SOME of the work for me, but to sit here and go through each of 220 prescriptions to sort by location and date and status is no fun

Haha...its true, but only when I'm on hold on the phone. Otherwise I'm a pretty good employee.

Well, that's good to know. I used to be a good employee.

If there is software that would make it easier, then requesitioning it would make a good, not-whiney way of bringing up to him how much time it requires.

Indeed. The IT guy and I have been on the lookout for something suited to our needs, but have slacked off because we just hired a new billing company that may give us access to their software.

Sorry to complain, its just incredibly frustrating to do by hand in an hour what a computer would take five minutes to do. (Especially knowing how quickly the report will be reviewed and tossed aside).

Good suggestion, though.

Complaining about stuff is what YT is all about, spoon.

Work sucks...end of sentence. And what I have learned is..the more you do and the better employee you are..the more they expect from you! So...as I do...take a 10 minute report and stretch it into an hour between visits to YT...and next time they'll only expect to get it in an hour.

Grrly is right again.
With a reliable database, this data would take minutes to manage and print.

Take a step back from the problem, and really solve it rather than just addressing the individual requests.
There is no reason to spend your days doing busy work. Thats what computers are for.

Do you just enter it in an exel document now?
8 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 12:54:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, right now I put everything into OpenOffice's "excel".
8 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 12:58:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Where do you get the raw data that you put into excel?
8 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 12:59:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh ok... I can't really think of any program right now to make it easier... We do all our programming in house.

The data is based on the prescriptions that come in. We get prescriptions from doctors throughout the southeast, then have to keep a record of how many we receive per month, then a record of how many different doctors sent in prescriptions that month, and a record of how many were scheduled from that month, imaged from that month, how many from that month are ready to be scheduled, how many from that month have rejected the service or requested a call back at a later time. We currently have one report that documents all of this, broken down by month, but now they want a month-by-month breakdown for each state, too. It'd be a lot easier if it were something I could constantly update and keep up with, but its hard enough to remember to make changes to one document.

Use the database software (called 'base') that is part of openoffice. Enter each transaction with the information needed, extract reports ad infinitum from the database.

The advantage fo a datebase is that you can categorize, sort, subtotal any way you want without re-entering the data.
The data entry is simple as long as you put each piece of information in its own field.

Genius, bookbyte. You are my hero of the day. I haven't tried it out yet, but after my lunch I will. Thanks!
