Name them and where to find them and whether you liked them or not.

(all time favorites are ok to add)

Two I watched this week:

1)Love Me [Netflix] A group of men travel to Ukraine to meet "mail order" brides. They have varying success.
Rating 9/10. Interesting and well made.

2)Anita [Netflix] In 1991, Anita Hill testified for a senate committee against US supreme court nominee Clarence Thomas. This doc has archival footage and interviews Anita now.
6/10: Not much new if you already know the story of Hill/Thomas.

Note: basic summary is ok, but please use spoilers if the documentary has surprising information.

I watched the first 2/3rds of this, so not rating it yet. It's surprisingly not that depressing, though (so far). Mixes crisis hotlines with lighter/neutral hotlines like the Homework Help hotline and Psychic Readings with Miss Cleo, etc.

I only shared the ones I really liked. All of these are amazing.

My lady was watching that Kurt Cobain one that just came out. It f*cking sucked. She loves documentaries and didn't finish it.

Dogtown and Z-Boys is really good, too.

burt's buzz

about the guy that is on all the burt's bees merchandise. how he was basically robbed of millions and doesn't even care about the money, but how someone he loved could do him so dirty. simple man.

brother's keeper
about three brothers that lived in a very rural area, they were illiterate farmers. one was found dead and one was charged with his murder. the thing was the one that was charged might have killed him because his brother was very ill and he wanted to put him out of his misery. the police coerced him into signing admission of being guilty, after intense interrogating. he man says he didn't know what he was signing and that the officers told him
he could go home if he just signed.

I watched Somm relatively recently on Netflix, which was really interesting, not knowing anything about wine.

Re: snowbdr's skate stuff, I watched Dogtown and Z-Boys, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography and Dragonslayer as a trilogy chronicling the history of skateboarding and that was a really cool ride.

The Amina Profile.

About a lesbian Syrian blogger during the Arab spring, who fell in love with a Canadian (online), wrote revolutionary posts, participated in demonstration, was kidnap by government agent and... Wasn't actually real at all.

The movie follows the Canadian lover around the globe, meeting people who did interact with "Amina". It ends with a surprise confrontation between the lover and the person who created Amina.

Very interesting.

Recently had my annual viewing of Senna. It is my favorite documentary of all time. Told without the talking heads, using entirely real life footage that makes it play out like a traditional movie. A wonderful, heartbreaking, crushing, movie. Senna was one of my idols growing up, and I remember the day of his fatal race with more clarity than nearly anything else in childhood. I've sent this film to others, as it is very much watchable for anyone, racing fan or not, but I don't think I'll ever watch it with anyone else. They'd likely be confused by me choking up as the film goes on, and bawling like a baby every goddamn time it gets to the end.

It used to be on netflix, but now I'm not sure where it can be found in digital form. I bought the blu-ray the moment after I first saw it.

I watched a couple on youtube..

Hitler's Hidden Drug Habit - which I found fascinating..learned a lot about the dude I didn't know..like the fact he had Parkinsons..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DJ...

also one on Death Masks I found interesting..using computers to recreate the 'real' faces of people from their death masks.

I have a kind of macabre fascination for things like this..

I want to watch Cobain: Montage of Heck.

I have The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness on my shelf but I have to watch 20 Ghibli films first.

I watched American: The Bill Hicks Story years back and that was well done. Good utilization of footage, pictures, audio. Good interviews.

I finished it and it does have depressing parts in the last third, too.
It didn't make me upset or anything, like The Bridge (sad doc about people committing suicide on the Golden Gate bridge)

I just watched Shakespeare Behind Bars. I don't think it's on Netflix or Amazon Prime, but it's pretty easy to get on DVD. The camera crew follows a group of male inmates in Kentucky who perform Shakespeare. I really enjoyed it. It was an interesting look at a way of life I don't know much about.

Every time I see that photo of Andreas Lubitz at the Golden Gate bridge, I say in my head "why didn't you just jump off THAT bridge, motherf*cker?"

I watched part 1 of a 3 part BBC documentary. This was Handmade: Glass.

It's 30 minutes of an artisan glassmaker and his apprentice crafting a jug. Virtually no dialogue, no voiceover, just watching 2 people craft a thing. It was really good.

The other two parts are Wood and Metal.

the recent hbo documentary about scientology?

i read that they had to hire over a hundred lawyers to fact check and make sure they werent going to get sued.

it was pretty dang interesting, but i felt like there is so much more to it, stuff we will never know.

Today I saw
The Salt of the Earth

Very powerful images. He created some iconic images I didn't know were his.

After shooting the Koweit fires, the civil war in Yougoslavia and the Rwanda genocide, he gave up photography. With his wife they decided to regrow a dead forest from his father estate. After long years of struggling, he achieved regrowing 1.2 million trees.

Then he felt inspired to make more photography, turning himself toward nature and wildlife. Still his pictures are as powerful as the conflicting ones.

Great movie.
