Anyone watching the BBC adaptation of the Hilary Mantel novels?

First episode was great - really well acted. Pleasantly sparky and snide dialogue. Not sure I buy Damian Lewis as Henry VIII - too used to seeing him as Brody.

Anyway, on the basis of this outing, I'm sad there's only going to be 6 episodes, covering Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies. It captures the atmosphere of claustrophobia and paranoia of the Henrician court really well. Its an amazing character study set in an interesting period lavishly brought to life by the BBC. Plus it's stuffed to the gills with great actors.

Mark Rylance is so good. I can't believe I've never seen him in anything before.

Apparently, he's won just about every stage award going and was creative director for The Globe, etc. He just chose to not do TV/Movie work.

Now he's in a couple of things, including a movie called The Gunman and an adaptation of The BFG.

Anyway, I'm totally in love with his voice.

i love his facial expressions
his careful worry, his almost imperceptible sarcastic smirks, the rare occasions when he actually evinces happiness
he communicates so f*cking much so subtly

Also, I love Wolsey.

He's the perfect mixture of amusing and cutting. His take down of Thomas Boleyn was masterful. Alas, he looks like he's not long for the world of Wolf Hall.

Well, I'm a bit of a history buff, so I know exactly where it's headed.
