I agree with Shakira2.
I don't think Pink Floyd's overrated. Not too much, anyway.
Agreed with KISS, they are a little bit. Was never really into them but they do have good songs.

I can argue that Creed and Nickelback were the presage of an entire genre of music.
But that genre was sh*t.
Therefore, they do not deserve to be highly-rated as bands because influencing a bunch of testosterone-fueled idiots with power chords, because it was total and absolute crap. |

The Sex Pistols - they didn't start punk, they were pieced together by their manager to promote a fashion style. They got their big break when Queen cancelled, and they basically broke bigger than they ever should have. They got everything they got by willing to work promotions rather than the grind work of recording albums and playing shows and selling records and tshirts at them. They fundamentally contradicted the entire ethos of punk rock. Fxck you Malcom McClarren, you are the worst Malcom ever.
Nirvana - First, grunge wasn't a particular sound, it was a marketing ploy. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice and Chains, and Pearljam sound nothing alike. Nirvana was lazy as fxck. And by Nirvana I mean Kurt Kobain, and Chris Novasalek or whatever, nobody cares. Dave Ghrol is, of course, everything that's been right about rock and roll since 1996. Nirvana meanwhile wrote shxt songs,

And put nonsensical lyrics over them and droned like they were bored. And it wasn't anything special, it was the second time that a subset of punk bands decided "hey, punk is awesome music, but it'd be cooler if it was more about boredom and boring shxt" (the first time was goth, if anybody is counting, and it wasn't better then either). Fxck Nirvana, but thanks for Dave. If you need bored sounding vocals that bad listen to Beck or Cake.
Pearl Jam - everything I said about Nirvana, minus the good stuff about Dave, plus the fact that Eddie Vedder's voice inspired an entire generation of shxt vocalists from one hit wonders to creed. Fxck you, dude.

I generally like Pearl Jam, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. That Last Kiss cover is horrible, imo, but if any other PJ song comes on teh radio, I don't change the station.
Overrated? Maybe.

what is the general consensus on the actual definition of overrated?
dictionary.com: to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate
urbandictionary.com: So due to personal opinion and anyone who hates anything that's well known, No matter how brilliant something is, if it gets a lot of media attention then there's always someone who will think it's overrated
I think ud's definition is closer to yt's definition.

What does it matter?
It's obviously a personal opinion as to what is "overrated".
If there's a band that's highly praised and you don't get it, then it's "overrated" to you.
