I think I'm going to anonymously report my employer to the health inspectors. They'll probably assume it was the girl who no call no showed tonight.
My boss called me in because of this absence, and I was feeling awful but went anyway because why not.
She offered to pick me up but then she made the opposite turn she was supposed to, and instead of like maneuvering over, she was honking at me to jaywalk in traffic. (I did it & I've done it before. There really should be a crosswalk right there. But still.)
It was a slow night and they really didn't need me there imo. There was one large party and it was one of the chefs there with his family for his birthday.
Boss Lady said something about me "earning" new hire paperwork with my good performance, which is uh, not how you do that. She also didn't include the I-9, it's just a W-2...
It's just seeming increasingly sketchy.

Doesn't that pretty clearly imply she wasn't going to pay me my first shift's wages if I underperformed??

Also a major issue for me is the lack of hand wash stations. Like, there's sinks, but inadequate soap and paper towel situation. At the server station there's a blue bottle of soap that's watered down. I've heard that can foster bacteria. While searching for facts about this, I just came across the phrase "diluted shampoo might be less drying," which is just mind-blowingly dumb.

Also the miso soup vessel doesn't look like it gets wiped down ever, the walls are kinda grungy, there's stuff in the walk-in that isn't covered.

I read the 'no call no showed' incorrectly and was wondering why they would think it was the girl that didn't shower that called in the complaint to health inspectors...

I looked up the health inspection report. It's from January 23 since it's under new ownership. Now, the owner has mentioned she's going to hire some people to do a deep cleaning, but I don't know how long restaurants are allowed to operate without fixing the issues from the report. The hand washing lameness was part of that, but supposedly it's a "minor" violation???? to not have soap????????? I think it's major now that it's been a couple weeks and nobody has bothered to buy soap?

Funny you should mention that. The other night when it was she & I being trained, the owner leaned in real close to me and I thought I was going to hear a secret but she was just like "okay, one of you definitely has B.O. and it's not you..."

Fish for sushi needs to be frozen to a very specific (and low) temperature for a few seconds, to kill bacteria and allowing raw consumption.

I didn’t mean kept in a regular freezer.

Oh yeah. I have no clue when/where that happens. I assume the supplier flash freezes the fish before delivery.

the owner showed up today with thermometers and 2 hand soaps, at least. but no soap for the server station; that's still the blue watered down stuff

I forgot to ask her tonight if there happens to be any other paperwork she wants me to fill out, but whatever. I'm just going to report her for not giving me the I-9 before beginning to employ me.
