I understand why Temp B was a little pissy if he thought that he put in more effort (which he did). He's also been there longer and knows more facets of the business according to you, so I can see how he would feel slighted.

But you have to make the best decision for the office, at the end of the day. If you think Temp A would do better in the role overall despite the lackluster interview, then you probably made the right choice.

My guess is that Temp A already knew she was likely to get the offer, hence the lack of effort. She didn't care because she knew that she didn't have to care. And to be fair, you guys kinda proved her right.

Oh and it probably doesn't help that Temp A is significantly younger than him too. Add that to the list.

knowing temp a, i don't think she's as cynically assured as all that. she knew the other temp was a very strong contender and had no reason to assume she'd get it over him. i think she's just very laidback in general.

an example i never mentioned before:
after we'd trained another temp who's no longer here, we had to have an extra meeting with him about his performance because it was substandard

but temp a heard we were doing that and specifically requested a meeting of her own so we could go over what she could improve on (which it turns out is nothing)

my point isn't that she's a perfect teacher's pet (although she is that)
it's that i think she's genuinely insecure and unaware of her value

or maybe we got played i suppose
but on this occasion we got played by the cunningly capable temp who mischievously does the job really well all the time

I don't think you were played. Like I said, you probably made the right choice if she's the strongest employee.

And I'm not talking about her personality in general (because I don't know her at all, of course), I'm just pointing out that people usually only half-ass interviews for a position they actually want if they're confident that they're going to get the job. It's not just how she dressed; you said her answers were perfunctory and lazy too. She might be insecure in general, but it doesn't sound like she was in this specific context. That's just my impression. But you're right, I could be wrong as I only know her as "Temp A," after all.

late but
hey maybe temp a was that temp with the story of
"the night before my interview i couldn't sleep, then in the morning i tripped into a puddle and had to wear the spare clothes in my car and wet hair to the interview, only to be too sleepy to say anything i prepared."

I'm team Temp A. Some people just interview incredibly badly. Doesn't mean they're bad at the job.

...especially since Skyfish mentioned that as a temp, she performed very well at the job.

Oh yay! Temp A got the job. Strong wok, interview team.

I do a lot of interviews. They're such pressure situations for the person on the other side of the desk.

The first thing I do with my interviewees is to sit them down, tell them not to be nervous, and that I genuinely want to see the best side of them.

We also give people trial days/weeks to evaluate how they are over a course of time and with a variety of work - this tends to bring up other stuffs that you found out about your candidates by working with them.

Interviews are weird. Like I'm sure I could fool people into thinking I'm competent and enthusiastic for an hour or so.
