a tale of two temps

this will be long and tedious and culminate in a moral dilemma. please take notes

so we have a permanent position going in my department. at the moment the department consists of me and my boss and at christmas we hire up to 6 temps as well as having people from the main part of customer services loaned out to us on a daily basis.
during the rest of the year, it's just me and my boss and the permanent customer service people who get to work in my department from time to time but also have other jobs and duties depending on the day

so anyway, this year we're actually hiring a full time dedicated member of our team who'll do just that work mon - fri rather than shifts

a bunch of people went for the job (including people already in permanent customer service positions, because this is a desirable role), but it's come down to two of our temps, both of who we would be delighted to have:

TEMP A
a chill down to earth 20ish girl whose previous job was the local fish and chip shop. funny and easygoing. incredibly quick at the job. very smart, picks everything you tell her up the first time, never makes mistakes. interested in other aspects of the job, already understanding the claims spreadsheets that only me and my boss do just by watching us doing them and talking about them.

TEMP B
a shy intelligent 30ish man. he's incredibly nice and a sincere and diligent worker. as the temp who's been with us the longest, he's trained in the most areas. he's perceptive and notices potential problems and asks good questions rather than let things go wrong.
however he's also fairly slow at his work and is prone to silly errors from time to time.

now there are also permanent jobs going in the main contact center which would be customer facing. as mentioned before, they would be rota'd into our team from time to time, but not every day by any means. TEMP B has also gone for this as well, TEMP A hasn't

SO
we had to interview everybody and i was thoroughly of the opinion that 'who the f*ck cares about the interview, we already know what they're all like'
me and my boss were both of the opinion that we give the job to TEMP A and TEMP B can get the customer service one and we effectively will have both

but then, the day of the interviews comes

TEMP A
turned up in a hoody with wet hair. now we're a casual dress code office but she honestly looked a bit scruffier than normal. and her interview was underwhelming at best. when asked what she liked about the position the one thing that kept coming up was 'not having to talk to customers'. which, yeah, but maybe not the thing to say in your interview? she was perfunctory and shallow in her answers and the whole thing was just a big let down, especially as we're rooting for her

TEMP B
had put on a smart shirt, combed his hair. was visibly nervous but took his time with every question, which was answered thoughtfully and meaningfully. backed up what he said with examples that we could attest to the truth of. used the any questions bit at the end to thank us for welcoming him into the team. acknowledged his weaknesses whilst talking about how he's improving on them. sincerely wants this specific job which he says is the first one he's had where he genuinely looks forward to coming to work each day (i believe him in this)

in short, it was a textbook example of a bad interview vs a good one.
and now we're incredibly torn
because based on the ability we know they have, it'd be TEMP A. but based on the interview, TEMP B f*cking earned it.

so what should we do?

(we have made a decision but i'm curious what you would do)

I think you gotta go temp B tbh. Temp A sounds like she'll cut and run when it's convenient for her, while Temp B sounds like he's in it to win it.

there's not that much in it
TEMP A was with us since late september i think? TEMP B was here a few months earlier and was the first temp we acquired because we thought he'd be good at the job (they all start off as regular customer service agents)

I agree. The person who's more serious about the job is generally the best bet.

I was trying to get a feel if her superior performance in the actual job might be an anomaly...

Personally, I'd put more weight on their actual past performance in the position rather than the interview. An interview is just a snapshot, while it's much harder to fake good performance over a few months of doing the work.

Temp A sounds like the stronger performer, I'd go with A, and hope that Temp B gets the other role for which they applied.

i'm concerned this is actually a factor. we have worked together in a small team in a small office for the past few months and the conversations are very informal and everyone hates customers.

i should also say (not that i'm trying to sway this either way) that whenever she DOES have to speak to a customer, she does so without complaint very professional
she was just very upfront why she didn't go for the other job
i do agree that it was a very unprofessional thing to say in the interview as frankly and it is one of the things that is making this an incredibly tough decision for us

If you hadn't worked with them before, you'd go for temp B. There was a reason that they had to interview for the position and it wasn't just handed to them.

Maybe because she knows and worked with you guys, she probably thought she could just be upfront and her previous work speaks for itself.
Which would be totally wrong of her.
