My best friend insists that i can learn to see things in my mind if I just try harder
My mom insists i'm making it up
I can't think of a way to describe to them how I know what things look like without being able to see them in my head
The idea they can just see pictures in their heads and like move and change them? That's weird to me

I have dreams with pictures! But when I remember them I can re-see them. I just know what I saw and can describe it, like with a movie. Or any other thing I've seen.

I've been arguing about this with my mom all day and now my head hurts.
The best moment was when my mom said "what is wrong with your brain?"
So many things, mom. So many things.

So yt, make me feel better about my handicap.
Tell me what's wrong with your brain

Huh, that sounds extremely frustrating!

At some point in my early/mid 20s my brain began to office space, and only gets worse.

Highs don't get too high, lows don't get to low. Pros are obvious lack of roller coaster emotions or extreme active stress/anxiety. Also able to keep very calm under pressure and able to easily act as a rock for others. Cons are strong will to procrastinate, lack of forward motivation, and an overall slow worry of life wasting.

My friend is like that in that she just doesn't picture stuff in her head. I can't imagine how she does it because she reads as much as me but never imagines it...
But I'm well aware that people's brains are incredibly different in ways you'd never suspect, as it's normally my brain that has something wrong with it

I don't do that either?

although i can picture lots of things, one thing i'm terrible at is faces
it drives me nuts when i read books where they spend a long time describing everyone's facial features because i just can't picture it at all

If I can picture myself in someone's body I can make auto suggestions to them.

I discovered this when I was about 11 years old, being one of the youngest I went to bed early which left 6 other active people walking around the house making noise and leaving light on. I had 2 light switches right above my bed, one for the ceiling light and one for the light on the stairs. The bedroom was a loft room and my dad deigned it without a door, so If someone left the ground floor hall light on it was very annoying. So I started to do this thing where I followed there steps down the stairs and I imagined I was them and as their foot hit the hall floor I reached out and flipped the light switch and darkness followed.

A few years later I told my mom and my little sister about it. and said lets try it. We al wrote something on a piece of paper and I said OK try to imagine you are the person you want to do it. After some time my mum said oh this is silly, Maureen to make a cup of tea. I turned over my paper and it said Mum Tell Maureen to make some tea. That wasn't something she would normally do, Maureen was about 12

I'm the same. The term "aphantasia" has recently had some attention as something like what you describe - my partner and some people I work with think I have it. I'm not sure if what I experience is really worth a label beyond simply being low on a continuum of mental imagery.

I've had lots of conversations with people about how I remember what people look like, what I'm doing when asked to think about how to get from my house to the local shop etc. It's hard to communicate it, and I don't know what other people experience, but I sometimes liken it to other senses - I have a memory for what things smell and taste like without sort of re-experiencing it in the way people describe mental imagery.

I have a mind's ear, though. I can imagine songs/voices/notes in my head in a way that I would liken to hearing it.

Hmm, I find it hard to explain. Like explaining what a color looks like..

But my visual memory is good but it's centered somewhere vague. I don't close my eyes and see the image like a movie screen or painting...but it's there, floating along the peripherals, very clear, but floating away and I can't keep it still.

...so are we all just going to ignore that Bored apparently thinks he can mind-control people and influence their actions by picturing himself in their bodies?
