you're welcome

so I got 2 jobs and lost both of those jobs. one of them was a boba tea place and I relished the free boba while it lasted but they fired me for ostensibly no reason. they wrote "reason: n/a" on the we're firing you form and I was like ahem, they didn't communicate... any reason? and the hr lady was like well it was multiple reasons. you didn't meet expectations and weren't a good fit. GREAT feedback for the future, thanks
the other job was very conveniently located because i could walk to it but it was simply a drag. i quit after 1 day (half day) of flipping through retired tax paperwork of the kind of clients who own properties and donate to pregnancy resource centers. did not meet expectations and wasn't a good fit.
now i have applied to be a sephora fragrance person which might be cool for me because i could possibly just smell all the smells during downtime.

You drank too much free boba...

Sorry to hear about your job problems.

I can't imagine working in a fragrance department or anyplace like Bath & Body Works because I can barely spend 15 minutes in them and I start to get nausea, a headache, or both. Don't get me wrong...I like a scent, but it has to be subtle.

The good news is there are probably a lot of places hiring seasonal workers.

cleaning the gooey boba gunk off metalware is awful and tedious and 12/hr isn't enough to do it

the local burlington is hiring in receiving, which i briefly did at a different location of theirs. idk if I'd do it again though. putting those little size indicating plastic nubs on the hangers was surprisingly brutal on my nails

there's an opening for.... ramen restaurant dishwasher. i could probably do that???? who knows
i might not have a job for some time

Didn't you have some cushy IT job at one point?
25 days ago - Wednesday 11/13/19 - 7:43:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
relatively cushy. they're still hiring techs apparently. but it's pretty far away from where i am now.
i had coworkers from this area with whom i carpooled but they probs don't still work there
i guess if i really wanted to i could find someone on the internet to carpool with, there are like a zillion people doing the LA/OC commutes
but eh

my sister was talking about getting a larger apartment so i could live with her in LA but idk what the timeline would be on that

Are you looking for something long term or just to pay the bills until something better happens?
25 days ago - Thursday 11/14/19 - 12:56:24 AM EST (GMT-5)

You’re close to Los Angeles, there must be lots of side acting jobs that aren’t union (recording for the blind, hand models, stock photo jobs. Helping actors memorize their lines (that’s mostly for theatre)

You’re also pretty tall, maybe they have a hard time finding stand ins for tall actresses. (Stand ins are the people of identical size of actors who stay on the set while actor is not. They are used when lighting the sets, framing camera etc.

The hours are usually long, the job can be sometimes ungrateful but the money is very good. Plus if they liked you standing for actress X who is a rising star, you could follow her on several projects. Word gets around.

I would love to get into the industry in any small random way, but transporting myself over there on a regular basis would be challenging

I should clarify, this is not something that can happen overnight. It’s a long shot because those jobs aren’t glamorous and more technical than artistic.

I was suggesting it as a long term goal while you’re
doing the “pay my bills” job.

You’re smart, you’re beautiful, people remember you. You can do this.

I cannot help, I have zero connection in the business in the US.

But it’s possible.

Also, I remember being impressed with your writing, that’s another thing.

But of course, also a long shot.

oh no! my anxiety's biggest nightmare

I almost posted this earlier. your comments reminded me of a convo I had in 8th grade, with my beloved drama teacher. I'd been in her plays all 3 years of middle school and I asked something like hey why did I never get a lead role? she gave a beautiful pep talk about how character actors are often remembered more etc.
but I came away from it sort of feeling like "okay I get it I am not conventionally attractive"

everything I have any motivation to do requires way more effort than I am physically capable of

thank you for saying kind things and giving advice but things feel completely hopeless and i will most likely just continue suffering alone

The thing with character actors is: every scenes count.
If you’re a lead, in a movie, you will spend days “getting out of your car and knocking on a door scenes” which I find tedious.

I prefer the colorful character with 3-4 scenes, as a job. But that’s personal.

You know Allison Jenney? She’s a 6 feet tall actress.
At the beginning of her career, she was told she would only play aliens or lesbians.

When your casting is not obvious, it takes some time before people offers you something different than the odd roles.

The best gift an actor/actress can have, imo, is range. The ones with most range have about 5 characters in them. People are always surprised at how few different people you can play: you learn to mix them to give something new.

But a character is also a script and a director. You get the Oscar, but truly, all three contributed.

I’m sorry I posted before reading this.

I really hope some good luck happen to you soon. Something you’d feel safe to stand on, a fondation for a reconstruction.

Good luck mysocks.

one of my college RAs apparently is studying TV screenwriting and producing at Chapman (a good school for film in this county) so maybe I'll beg to be in any pilot she may make

Doing students films is a great way to gain experience. It’s even tougher than the professional stuff since they’re also learning.

Just make sure they have enough money for theprojects. I don’t have enough fingers to count the number of student projects I did that were abandoned in post production.

I was interviewed for a student documentary a couple years ago but I neglected to follow up and ask to see it.
Apparently I still have the filmmaker's number in my contacts... I don't know if I'm curious and gutsy enough to ask to see it this long after. I mean it's not like she would have deleted it, right?
Maybe I'm in some portfolio that a bunch of film schools have seen

oh that reminds me in 2017 I was filmed for a MUSEUM EXHIBIT with my HAIR LOOKING LIKE THIS
