Today, I decided to try to publicly log the times members try to break threads that are about sensitive topics.

How it's gonna work:
-I'm gonna post here about threads I see that I'm thinking about reporting, just to have in one place
-**I'm going to ignore derailing posts and need for you to ignore them as well** this way the thread isn't a chore to slog through and doesn't lock too quickly.
-Instructive contributions welcome; conversations between two users discouraged - if you find yourself responding to the same person more than once, kindly stop.

ok.

Is this a thread intended for everyone to post 'reportable' threads, or just you?
1 month ago - Friday 10/18/19 - 12:36:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
it's a journal about sensitive topics that are broken by spammy posts, in which spamming is discouraged.

Oct 18 - thread about the shooting of a person of color, previously about violence against people of color in which a member interjects with as postal put it, a 'personal vendetta' which unsurprisingly ends the discussion in less than a page.

It was a valid tangent- - Bird brought up how people in positions of authority need to be held to higher standards, which I took to be a hypocritical statement...

if members want to contribute examples of
a) a sensitive thread about real and traumatic events
that
b) is interrupted by derailing and irrelevant comments
which
c) ends the discussion on the topic
you're welcome to do so and encouraged to make a report.

if the post about those derailing threads doesn't qualify under the three guidelines I'm specifying, I'll probably explain how this is the case and then *ignore* the post.

Nah. I'm more than capable of deleting this thing and adding screenshots in future journals whenever they apply.

i have faith in most people on the site, though, and hope they ignore whatever boneheads try to make inane posts so that this thread for the most part is just a boring log.

I like this idea, though I think that I already know the outcome of this thread (more or less).

And this thread will become 25 pages of cowflop whining and people arguing with him, just like every other thread.

Umm,
sounds like this is journal about why you don't like cowdung

nope, I'm hopeful you and others wouldn't take the bait if it came down to it.

Why do you have such a hardon for cowdung?

who are you? seems like not someone who's been around to fairly gauge the point of this thread, certainly not someone with a good picture of my interactions with CD, and overall not contributing anything worth responding to further.

thanks! thinking of how to keep ourselves accountable in a transparent way that's straightforward and encouraging of staying on-topic.

I think its a good idea. It is frustrating when an interesting thread is purposely stopped by irrelevant posts or personal attacks.

So, after it gets posted... what happens?

thanks! It's been posted by mods that derailing is hard to moderate so I wanted to find a place to gather the most clear instances of thread breaking using a clear definition of how it has tended to happen (finding very sensitive topics to interrupt with harmful comments in order to shut down conversation.)

good question. I think most likely, if i post a screenshot and explanation of how it is intentional thread breaking, I will have also made a longer report to moderators. It takes time for mods to post to their forum and decide what to do, if anything, but my hope is that it's easier to really clearly point out unacceptable behavior.

But who is more guilty, the original poster or the enablers?

the original poster, 100%. This latest report is actually a great example of how a poster may suggest not responding, but because of how intensely the toxic behavior had already escalated conversation it being such a devastating topic, all subsequent comments only contributed to the thread shutting down.

The poster who suggested not responding, in fact, got into a weird and unproductive back-and-forth.

I'm puzzled how calling out bad behavior gets equated to "enabling"
1 month ago - Friday 10/18/19 - 12:25:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
don't feed the troll is an old internet maxim
obviously the troll is still a troll, but stop feeding that troll
1 month ago - Friday 10/18/19 - 12:28:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
funnily enough though this journal is a good example of how it can work well

there's a difference between trolling and harming folks' wellbeing in forums by picking out topics with trauma to exploit. That's why despite the internet maxim, forums have guidelines against hate speech, targeting messages, and harassment. All comments are doing at this point, like postalbear writes, is point out posts that are purposely charged.
