We've decided to take the family on a big road trip and I'm looking for things to do off our route. I've looked stuff up, but am always up for suggestions.
We may skip Yellowstone, depending on time. But we're moving to that general area next year, so not that big of a deal.

Duuude, how have you been? What's new?

We've been trying to get to the Grand Canyon but it's SO HOT here this time of year.

I've been great! Just living the life.

We aren't going until September, so I'm hoping it'll be cooler by then. If not, it can't be much worse than what we're used to.

How have you been? Still enjoying the desert?

You’re missing Rocky Mountain National park?
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 8:44:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Ah true.
Road trip with kids? Would change my suggestions.

Hmm, i can't think of any MUSTS in el paso at the moment.
Couple cute Billy the Kid shops/ old buildings in Mesilla.

That's about all I've been to on your route i think, that i didn't sleep through

The weather is nice, 8 months ish of the year. Real life tumbleweeds are odd to see/hit with the car.
Super lack of musicals come around here.

A lurker has finally posted!!

How old are the kids?
Because this may just be a disaster in waiting lol

We're moving to Colorado next year and we've been quite a few times. The end of September can be a little dicey weather wise. We actually got married in RMNP.

Just me and the wife on this trip. Something we've wanted to do for a while. I didn't think there would be that much in El Paso, but we're camping and trying to time the drive so we have time to set up camp. El Paso just kind of fell in the right time frame. I'm sure we'll check out Billy the Kidd though.
Aren't you relatively close to a couple of bigger cities though? You could always go to Vegas.

I know! It's been a while! They won't be on this trip.

Vegas is rather far to drive. Not super far. But far
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 8:57:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's only like 10 hours or so! That's a good weekend trip!
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 8:59:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
We are too old to drive that far in one day
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:00:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
I do hope we get there though. Vegas, grand canyon, California, phoenix, and la are on my list. LA has seemed kinda sketchy lately though maybe not there.
Tough though, with his schedule.
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:09:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
I bet you two could make it. 10 hours really isn't all that bad. If you do, you knock 3 things off of your list! Vegas, grand canyon, and phoenix.

Don't blame you at all on LA. We thought about it, but sitting in traffic would kind of blow our timeline.
Is he tenure track or adjunct?
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:23:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
Tenure track, but a workaholic. January and june or august we have to vacation. Trying to watch our spending as well.

Va to ny was about 9-11 hrs depending on traffic and that was pushing it he used to be able to drive like 16 hours in one go but in the past few years we've decided to chop up drives longer than 6-7 hours into a few days. Which is more time and money.
Hes super heat sensitive so we are thinking phoenix in January but grand Canyon doesnt seem to be open then.
Ah, my vacation woes have been the subject of most of my journals/yt postings lately ha.

You're swinging within hitting distance of me when you get to Moab. Just look at the mountains to the east and remember there's Colorado and other cool places to visit on that side.
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:28:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
Id suggest stopping in here but that'd be.. weird
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:39:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
You could visit the south rim in January. It'll be cold though. But you guys should be used to that. Or you could go in august and buy a fan.

West of the Rockies is just Utah. I think the furthest we've gone is Breckenridge. Any suggestions for that side of Colorado? We're definitely open.

That would be weird.
11 days ago - Saturday 7/6/19 - 9:39:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
Why weird

if you want good food I would go the route that swings you through louisiana

the other route you won’t eat so well after memphis

Mesa Verde national park, lots of hot springs in different towns, lots of cute mountain towns like Telluride, Ouray, Durango, Silverton, Pagosa Springs. All have springs except Telluride, but they have a free gondola ride that is well worth the drive. There's also a tourist steam locomotive railroad in Durango.

On the Utah side, you should go to Coomb Ridge. It's a huge geological feature in the desert. There's also just an absolute ton of ruins to see but Utah doesn't advertise where they are, you have to do a decent amount of sleuthing.
