So I took Satan's Taxi (new name for my vehicle with non working A/C) to try to get the system recharged. It didn't work. The compressor IS shot. The guy did top off the Freon and charged us $25.

So now what I am wondering is...since it had not been recharged since last spring/summer and it had so much Freon still in it then that means IF it does have a leak which the dealership claims, it is a very slow leak. Am I right? Or on the other hand is it just not leaking because the compressor is shot therefore the air is not circulating throughout the vehicle? I really don't know much about how it works.

What I am getting at here is...since there was so much Freon left is it worth it to fix the compressor at $600? Or should I just apply that towards like ten car rentals or so?

In any event, new car next spring. Just trying...

to figure out how to get through the summer in this heat and humidity.

YT was down when I tried to log on the other night. What happened?

What have you people been doing when YT is down?

I'm sure we'll get no explanation for why yt was down.

So did the stealership diagnose the leak?

I have reservations about Dodge. For one thing, they didn't even find the leak the first time around. And the second thing is that they had no mention of the compressor. But two smaller repair shops did diagnose the broken compressor.

I could pay $600 to one of them and get that compressor fixed. It may do the trick, even for a little while. But my main question here is if there is quite a bit (almost full) of Freon already in the system, that must mean that *IF* there is a leak, it is slow, right? Or is it just not leaking because the compressor isn't getting the air to circulate through the vehicle? I don't want to throw away $600. But if the $600 will fix the A/C for the rest of the summer it is worth it. It doesn't start cooling off enough here enough until November.

Does the Freon still leak even if you aren't running the A/C?
9 days ago - Sunday 6/9/19 - 3:49:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure.
9 days ago - Sunday 6/9/19 - 4:24:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
How many car rentals will you use between now and November? And how much is a rental on average?
9 days ago - Sunday 6/9/19 - 6:26:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
It depends on what we rent and for how long. The truck was $60 for a day. The car was $57 for two days. The car didn't have enough space in the trunk for the double stroller.

We would be renting when we are going to be in the car for a good part of the day...like when we drove to Atlanta. Or even if we drive from where we are now to Sevier County, that is like an hours drive. But we won't rent when we just go to the doctor or to the store or something.

The thing is on the weekend I like to go. We didn't rent a vehicle this past weekend. We did go do a bit of shopping and visit my mother. The temp wasn't high but it was raining and we couldn't put the windows down. It was humid. Anything over 70 and I am uncomfortable and so are the kids.

Everyone shrugs it off and tells me to just put the windows down. There are problems with that.

1. Rain, which it did all weekend.
2. It gets too hot at the stop lights, which there are plenty of and my husband always says TN lights last too long.
3. People in other cars are smoking and if you pull up near them, you can smell it.
4. Bugs will fly into the car. A wasp came in the other day.
5. If you are in an accident, even a minor one or even if one happens in front of you, pieces can fly back and inside your car. We once witnessed an accident right in front of us and a bunch of pieces flew back and hit our Prius.
6. My hair flies into my face and eyes even though it is tied back. That is because it is in layers. When it flies into my eyes, and I am driving...well that is not good. That is also why I rarely ever put the top down in my convertible.

We are not used to being in non A/C. I keep my apartment at a cool 65 year round. The A/C even has to run in the winter sometimes due to the heat from the other apartments coming in here. I am very hot natured and so are my kids. My husband, not so much. But he is driving Satan's Taxi to and from work...coming home isn't so bad because that is midnight. And most of his commute is on the interstate. But still...

If you have the 600 dollars, I'd say give it a try getting fixed. It's causing you a lot of stress.

I really didn't have the spare cash to get new brakes and new expensive windshield wipers this year but I was getting terrified every time I drove and managed to scrape up the money somehow. Also finally got defective airbags replaced. Let's just say I still dislike driving but it's a thousand times better now.
9 days ago - Sunday 6/9/19 - 10:53:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
How long has it been since you refilled it with freon? The time before now i mean

Supposed to get it serviced every 3 years, refill etc, so if about that and it was still pretty full, i'd say the leak really must be minimal

And 600 for a new compressor can't be all that bad? About what we pay for just the freon refill here.

And mouse, ugh airbags, don't get me started.. I used a ton of money on that this year.
Luckily the airbag is only defective like 1% of the time, otherwise i'd have had to use a couple thousand on that(plus work) instead of the airbag ecu, which i managed to find used for a few hundred dollars instead.

I really should get new wipers as well, but is summer so i mostly ride my bike anyways

We have the money to get the compressor fixed but I am a cheapo and don't want to spend it if it isn't going to fix it at least for the summer. That is why I am wondering about this claimed leak.

trainwrec, the Freon was replaced/recharged last spring at the Dodge dealership.

I just hate to spend $600 for nothing. I even hated paying that dude the $25 to top off the Freon...because it got no results. I am a cheapo!

And yes, this is the most stressful thing in my life right now.

Do they make mini portable air conditioners for your car?
9 days ago - Monday 6/10/19 - 1:38:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think you forgot to mention one of the most important things, infant car seats are heat traps. They’re not like the seats of the past prior to ac. A sub beating down on a baby in one of them could be deadly.
9 days ago - Monday 6/10/19 - 1:53:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have looked for all kinds of solutions. They make portable A/C but the reviews are terrible.

And yeah, I hate my children being in the car with no A/C even for a ten minute drive to their doctor. They are the reason why this is upsetting me so much. Yes, I am personally extremely uncomfortable in the car, but I don't *worry* about myself like I do them.

Personally i'd do two things before deciding on anything
Nr 1: open the fuse box(probably the one down by the left side of your steering wheel and not the one in the engine room) and read the fuse chart, find the fuse and check it. If it's ok then
Nr 2: check the wire connection on both ends, the ground, the compressor, that sort of stuff. Gets lots of vibrations so might have gotten lose, and or have gotten corroded.

If it doesn't pan out, then yeah got to decide. If you basically need the AC for a few months, personally i'd look into just getting a fan to power from the cigarette lighter and tint the windows, tinted windows really help a lot. Cause 600 dollars for a few months seems kinda steep if you are getting a new car next spring

And the leak, if it lasts until next spring then fine, if you got to fix the compressor, might as well have them fix it.
9 days ago - Monday 6/10/19 - 2:26:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
And as for the leak, you can easily check it yourself. Spray bottle, water and soap(that you use for dishes)

And spray on the hose/pipe, turn it on, and see where the bubbles form.. Basically like what you do when you fix a bicycle tire.

And to fix it you got a few options. Some work kind of like spackle, mix it and just spread on the area(after it's been cleaned)
Or some work like tape, Which can also be used to fix plumbing. Really sticky, just wrap it around tight, and when it dries it gets really hard and it wont let the gas escape.

If you want a quick fix to make it last until you get your new car.

Not sure how mechanically minded you and your hubby is, but should be easily enough. Or perhaps a friend/parent can do it

And there's always youtube videos.
But might not be a leak, the gas lvl drops anyways from use etc

The Durango has factory tinted windows.

These supposed leaks are in a very hard to get to area underneath and that is why it is so expensive to repair. It isn't something we could do ourselves. The labor is the most of the cost estimate.
8 days ago - Monday 6/10/19 - 4:38:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
Factory tints are usually very light though.. So might help to put a 4% tint on yourselvew, the films are cheap so

And hmm, well. If it is for a few months, let it leak if it lasts until autumn
8 days ago - Monday 6/10/19 - 2:25:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
When the car is parked, if the forecast doesn't call for rain we crack the windows and roof. And we put the shade in the front windshield.
