So, my husband's (really nice and sweet) coworker is leaving, moving to be closer to her family in Puerto Rico. I wanted to bake her fancy, detailed decorated cut out cookies. Few problems.

I used the wrong recipe. The last batch is in the oven now. And I've realized I used the tasteless recipe I tried and didn't like, instead of the good, tasty recipe.

Do I start again? Its a pain. To roll them out, cut them out, bake them. But I haven't cleaned up yet. And at least I didn't decorate yet, theres no coming back from that.
But I want them to taste good.
I'll start again. Such a waste. Okay one problem solved.

Other problem, how do I decorate them? I'm making circles and stars. I want them to look nice. Either elegant or cute. Elegant might be a bit out of my skill-set. I can't really envision what I want them to look like though. Royal icing, I'm going to give another go. Hm.

I'd post pictures. But YT won't let me.

It's not a waste! Now you have a few batches of subpar cookies to test decorations on.

Too bad it's nowhere near Christmas or you could do those adorable little Santa star cookies.

If you're doing royal icing (which I assume means flooding) anyway, why not try something along these lines? They are both cute and elegant, and would also avoid the need to tweezer on individual sprinkle things.

That's such a good point!

Hmm. I successfully flooded white onto some subpars.

Oh! All the good ones are round.

I still don't know what to decorate.i want to get a liiittle more complex than what you posted, but not much

I should have shaped these more helpfully.

My ear itched. There was royal icing in it. Under my giant headphones. Sigh.

I wanna post pictures of the done cookies but yt won't let me and it's driving me a bit crazy.

Some people have had luck with screenshots of photos they've taken, or from using upload -> take image, rather than choosing one they've already taken (that's the only way it works for me on my phone anymore )

Woo! Won't work on my phone or tablet, so I posted them on fb, saved them to my laptop, and can post them from there

I don't think pics do them justice. I can't get a good pic

I know the technique you used for that, and it's trickier than it looks. One of those things that sounds simple until you actually try to make it look decent.

I'm still learning royal icing my first flooding attempt.
Most of the designs i googled and liked are beyond me at this point.
I figured i could take a toothpick to them
One of them (you can probably see which one) breeched its barrier wall and spilled out I'll probably eat that one

It's so hard keeping my husband away from them. There's a ton of the subpar ones (which he thinks are amazing).

He shouldn't be eating any of these. But he has such a weakness for cookies and no will power. The naked ones are hidden. And i told him if he ate one of the iced ones that are drying he'd lose some body parts.

There's now a giant mess in the kitchen i REALLY don't want to clean up. I want to go to bed (i woke up super early today)

I like these. We just did something very similar. I coated the cookies with royal icing and let my kids “watercolor” decorate them with very watered down gel coloring. They really looked like watercolor and it was a big hit.

I do wish royal icing tasted better.

I’m not a big fan of icing or frosting or cookies with that on it. I’m not really that crazy about cookies to begin with though.

Yeah, it's a bit of a predicament. Royal icing seems so fun to play and decorate with. But is very meh tasting. Kinda like fondant. But at least fondant you can pull off. I'd rather my things pretty AND tasty.
My husband can't get enough of them though but i just assume he's weird. And that most people wouldn't like the lack of sweetness of the cookie and the meh of the icing.
Its so fun though
