An idiot veered over into my lane and hit my right front fender. This happened on a very busy road and I was going faster than them. I pulled up to a large gas station and they pulled someplace behind me...I was having to look through my rear view and there was so much traffic I didn't see exactly where they went.

It did some damage to my fender. I have liability only. Thank goodness this happened in the car we own and not the rental which we were on our way to return.

I didn't have my phone, it was in the other car, the rental. So I didn't call anyone. I also had like ten minutes to meet my husband at the rental car place so after waiting in the parking lot for five minutes I went on...

What I am wondering is...(cont.)

Is this a hit and run since they didn't follow me to the parking lot?

Should I call my insurance and report it? I have liability and uninsured motorist. If I do, will this reflect *my* record and increase my rate? Will they cover the damage since I never got to get with the driver that hit me and didn't file a report? I am thinking that with how expensive body shops are they very well may just total my car and I don't want that. Also even if they don't, I would have to pay the deductible, right? It is $500. The car needs painted anyway and so this damage while it pisses me off that someone was such an idiot behind the wheel...it is damage I can live with.

What shall I do?

Pics?

I didn't take a pic. We just got home like half an hour ago. We were rushed... Had to have the car rental back in time or else get charged for another day for that car to sit in a parking lot all day. Then had to get back home in time for husband to go to work. That is where he is heading now and he may have left his phone in the rental car. Ahhhhhhh!

I crunched my fender on a bollard that I didn't see in a parking lot. Most embarrassing thing I've ever done to a car. Luckily it didn't damage anything else.

I found a replacement fender at a junkyard and put it on myself. It's the same color and everything. You can't even tell anything ever happened.

You'd be amazed how many replacement parts are on ebay. Junkyards will list parts on there.

I really don't care because the car doesn't look great to begin with. But what I am concerned with is that they will report it to their insurance and lie and said I hit them. I had that happen to me in the Prius and although the cop wrote that it was not either of us fault, it is counting as an accident on my insurance and therefore I have an increased rate. That one is about to fall off my report, too so I don't want another one.

This idiot came right into my lane and hit me. I bet they were on their phone. They had a nice newer car, too. I hope it did more damage to theirs than mine. I hope it broke their headlight or something.

I don't know how all of that works, insurance and the "he said, she said" stuff.

I've never had an accident and the only claim I ever filed was for a cracked windshield.

This is your old durango, right?

there's probably not much you can do without a police report and their license plate number
24 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 3:08:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. The broken A/C car. We cannot find a small mechanic who wants to even fix the A/C because the work is too intense and Dodge wants over $3000. The car is 2005 with 220000+ miles. It runs great, though. But it needs a paint job, and now a new fender!

We decided not to invest anymore into it other than oil changes and small maint. and see how far we can drive it into the ground.

I am working on improving my husband's credit and next April when he has been on the new job for a year we are going to buy another vehicle. We just rented a 300 and although it had enough room in the rear seats for two car seats, it wouldn't accommodate three and we may have another child. Plus our double stroller would not fit in the trunk.

But the truck we rented last weekend is what I want but they are so freakin expensive!!!

They could have gotten my license number because I was ahead of them...but I didn't turn back to go to them because I didn't see where they were and I had to meet my husband. That is why I am worried they will lie and say I hit them. But they didn't follow me to the Pilot parking lot so I don't know. Why didn't they follow me?

When that old man hit me in our Prius I followed him. Not that it helped. The cop said neither of us were at fault. Even though he had a handful of pills he was pulling out of his pockets...I asked the cop to go check him because working in my field I know many meds can impair your driving. Plus he was at deaths door and actually died like a year later.

I would imagine they can't just point to damage on their car and say "_____ license plate did it". There would have to be a police report.
24 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 4:06:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
But they could have taken my plate number since I was ahead of them and claimed a hit and run.

It just bothers me that they get away with doing that to my vehicle, when they were a bad driver.

This. Too bad you didn't have a phone. Should've alerted the police to try to find their car in the area if they pulled into another lot. Maybe asked to use the gas station business phone if you had had spare time before needing to get to the rental place.
Your insurance company won't have evidence that anyone else caused the damage.
On the bright side, it's unlikely that the other motorist will pursue anything. Probably just happy to get away with it. Possible that fhe pattern of damage can show that it must have been them who caused the damage.

Take a bunch of pictures when your vehicle gets home on the miniscule chance that the other vehicle comes after you.

Just did some brief research on this and the answer to uninsured motorist+ hit and run is:
Depends on your state and your insurance company. May require you to pay a deductible because they cannot recoup payment from the other driver. You can call and ask before making a claim, I suppose.
23 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 8:24:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah it's ridiculous. I was hit a few weeks ago and there was a lot of damage to my front:

But it drove fine. The insurance adjuster said it would cost about $5,000 but my deductible was just $250. Then a few days later I got a call saying that after they opened the hood and inspected it, they decided it would cost over $10,000, which they said was close to what the car was worth so they decided it was totaled. Even tho it drove fine.

Also I used to work at a body shop and while the people there were all really good to me and generally nice people... I got the sense that they wouldn't hesitate to increase estimates based on how they felt about the customer.

23 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 8:24:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Also I was in high school and they had cinema for adult viewingo mags in the bathroom and beer in the shop fridge. So even tho I have absolutely no interest in cars... it was a pretty sweet place to work.
23 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 9:13:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah. Even at Dodge I pulled the "But my little babies" card regarding the A/C getting fixed. And the lady at the service center desk called me back after telling me over $3000 to fix it, she talked to her manager and pulled together as many discounts as possible and it was still closer to $3000.

The body shops are incredible, though. I went to one to get an estimate on painting my car and they wanted over $5000 because they wouldn't do it without fixing every single problem...and my car has some very tiny dings and such from being on a farm, gravel roads, etc. I wasn't asking for a show car paint job!
23 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 9:14:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
And if my kids had been in the car today I would have had to replace their car seats. So irritating. People need to either drive right or stay off the damn road.
23 days ago - Sunday 6/2/19 - 9:39:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
The problem with having your car repainted and them doing if half-ass is, if someone asks you who did it and you tell them, that makes them look inept, so I totally get that. A car with 220K is not worth repainting, at any rate.

The only cars, imo, worth a total repaint are show cars.

Yeah they definitely have a lot of freedom to set the prices so if a close friend or family member of an employee had an accident, it would be ridiculously cheap to repair. If it was a total stranger? It might cost 4 or 5 times as much. And sometimes they just didn't like a customer and set deliberately high prices to make them go somewhere else. They didn't always pick up on it.

I disagree because it might mean enough to the person and make them happy enough to have the paint job.

My Uncle's friend gave him an old Ford truck. The truck ran great but looked like crap. My Uncle took it and got like a 1K paint job, had it painted red and then he was so damn proud of that truck.

With our Durango, I just love it so much and I think I am seriously going to cry when the day comes that we do get rid of it. Of course that will be when it no longer runs. But it is kind of sentimental to me. It is the first vehicle we bought together. We had an adventure going to NYC to buy it. We have driven it in ice and snow storms. We took our first beach trip together in it. We towed my horses behind it. And now it serves as the family car it was always intended to be (after eight years of trying, it finally has two little car seats in the rear with two little

I really wish I had stayed in auto mechanics and auto body in vocational school. I only took a year of it and got a little aggravated because the instructors had us four girls sweeping the shop while all the boys got to do the actual work.
