We have Charter/Spectrum Internet because when we moved here we were told it was the only option. The speed sucks and they just increased my bill and won't give me anymore promotions at this time. $70 a month for a sucky Internet.

Meanwhile AT&T which we had before in a different place and was better service is offering us the Internet AND basic TV with three free months of the premium channels for $75 a month. I cannot get this service because this place will not allow us to get the satellite we need placed on our balcony. Even though it would not harm the property.

This is all because the landlord has some deal with Charter, I'm sure. But this monopoly is illegal according to the FCC. They are getting away with it by the no satellite clause in our lease.

"Absolutely no satellites" even though it would be installed in such a way that no drilling would be needed. It would simply be placed on the balcony railing.

They think it is unsightly. Well I think the forty or fifty cigarette butts I see in the parking lot and breezeways are unsightly. I also think they need to change the lightbulbs in the mailbox area which has been without light now for the majority of the time we have lived here.

We are going to have to eventually move back into a three bedroom and will probably move to another place. I have asked the property manager numerous times to look in a three bedroom and you want to know what she told me? She said I could catch the maint. man as he is going into the one across the hall and when he goes in I can go see that one. She is too lazy to show us the three bedrooms here.

Geez.

What about those other Internet things...those little devices where you don't have to be wired through your house. How do those work?

Oh yeah and AT&T would be giving us a $200 gift card for signing up with them. So this place is really annoying me now for being sneaky and preventing us from using the Internet provider of our choosing!

Get some of that decorative bamboo fencing to put on your balcony, if they come to inspect put a cardboard box or a table over it
22 days ago - Friday 5/3/19 - 11:03:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
They wouldn't let us put that fencing up either. I was reading that some people take a tire and cement and put the satellite in that or whatever. But what we were told is "absolutely no satellites". It has nothing to do with them not wanting the property drilled into or whatever. They have some deal with this stupid Charter/Spectrum company.

When I called Charter/Spectrum to tell them I knew we could get another provider (because before I was told it just wasn't available here) and then told them about that offer, the guy was like "Yeah I'd go with it if I were you". He didn't even bother to put me through to the retention dept. All he suggested is that we stop renting the router from them and it would save us $5 a month. Ha ha ha it is like they know we are screwed here.

I think it's appalling that the property manager would have you look at someone else's occupied home! Unless I'm reading that wrong?

I bought a WiFi unit from t Mobile when I was living with my grandparents. It was fifty a month, not unlimited but enough data that I could stream TV each night and not run out. Still, not ideal.

That sucks. We can have satellite here but frankly I'm too lazy to change things up.

I'm going to rant that my apartment building has had a nearby hallway smoke detector chirping every 20-30 seconds for a whole week now. It's really loud and aggravating. Usually the landlord comes by once a week to vacuum/collect quarters from the laundry room. Seems like she skipped this week or heard the beeping and decided not to fix it.

No one wants to call her because she's incredibly annoying and will then call and text you like 500 times about the issue. I think she's just incredibly anxious but it comes off almost as harassment how she acts.

It's bad that they want to deny you the choice, but if it's any consolation, satellite internet is notoriously awful and unreliable. So you might not even be better off if you could get it.

My rant is that I'm trying to help rent out the other unit here, and the spare keys aren't where they should be. We had an elaborate hide-a-key system and while all the other parts are where they should be, the first one is missing. I think my upstairs neighbor (who didn't know about the system) may have accidentally thrown it out when cleaning the shed.

No, the unit was empty for like three weeks. I have no idea why she couldn't make the time in those three weeks to show us the apartment. It was left to me to catch the maint. man on his way in and tell him I wanted to see the apartment.

We had AT&T satellite when we rented our house and loved it.

On one of our inspections they wrote us a lease violation because one of our smoke detectors needed batteries. It didn't chirp to let us know so we didn't notice it, either. I don't know why it couldn't have just been mentioned during the inspection (we were both here). No, they had to type out a formal letter and give that to us as a lease violation.
22 days ago - Saturday 5/4/19 - 1:09:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
And they stuck that letter on our door right after the inspection. I would have been embarrassed except after their inspections like half of the apartments here have those white letters on their door. They are very strict here.

It is pouring down rain. I kind of wanted to go out and about today. But it is not fun to take two young children out in the rain. Plus people drive like idiots in the rain and there are usually traffic jams due to all the accidents.

Maybe today is a good day to do more sorting and organizing.
21 days ago - Saturday 5/4/19 - 6:02:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
It stopped raining but now it is 6. Too late to go I suppose. And going through this closet is boring. I don't know why I cannot part with things. I should be able to hold it and ask if it sparks joy but I fail. I always think that I may wear that item...someday.

But I did call AT&T and got set up for Internet ONLY. Will be paying $50 per month plus tax and it is a slower Internet speed than what we are supposed to have through Charter/Spectrum right now but it is a dedicated line not shared so it may be as fast as or faster in the end. It is not the great deal I would have gotten if these buttheads had let us put the satellite out but I am not going to contribute to their little kickback anymore.

Can you go with AT&T's non-satellite TV?
20 days ago - Monday 5/6/19 - 9:16:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
What state do you live in?
20 days ago - Monday 5/6/19 - 9:21:43 AM EST (GMT-5)
I was thinking there might be a state law protecting tenants, but the FCC has a rule prohibiting landlords from restricting their tenants from installing satellites/antennas provided that the installation comply with some requirements.

i don't know if this will work all the time, but a friend of mine (who lives in the SF bay area) told me he was "cancelling" after the promo period. they forwarded him to retention and he was able to keep the same rate for several years and get speed increases.

i guess it's all luck of the draw when you talk to customer service reps. i'd rather have $70 than walk away with $0 and a competitor gets my $70 if i were in their shoes.
20 days ago - Monday 5/6/19 - 1:36:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
I ended up getting the AT&T Internet only. I read about that FCC law but the thing is...the renter is screwed. If I pushed it...and I have thought about it...they could start nitpicking on other things and find a way to evict us. Or make our lives here hell. I am in TN, BTW.

I did call Charter/Spectrum and I told them I now knew we didn't have to use only them and told them about the deal we were offered through AT&T. I also said I don't really want to go through the hassle of switching or go into contract with a company and the Charter/Spectrum rep said the AT&T deal was too good to pass up and all he could offer me is the advice to stop renting their router, buy my own and that would give me a $5 a month discount.

I lived with satellite tv most of my life and I'll never go back to that when cable is an option for me. Our cable tv and internet seldom ever has any sort of issue.

I would move.
