had to go to the emergency room around 9:30 this morning because they were worried my dad was having another stroke
at least that's what they told my mom, so she was freaking out and called me and i wasn't doing too great either

but thankfully that's not what happened
he can't swallow well right now, so he hasn't been eating enough, so he is just really weak from that
they'll be putting a plug into his side to get food directly into his stomach and that should hopefully solve the hydration and energy problem

and while i was thinking that would be the most exciting part of my day i get a call from a friend who had a super bad f-cking lsd trip
so like i had just left the emergency room to grab some lunch and i had taken one bite out of my sandwich when i get that call, so i rushed from my apartment to hers trying to talk her down on the phone...

and there's traffic and sh-t keeps delaying me and it was f-cking stressful

when i get there she is freaking out and is worried she's broken from reality and will never recover and she was in that state for about two hours when she was able to sleep the rest of it off

thankfully i generally deal well with stress so i was able to be a calming presence on the outside while freaking the f-ck out on the inside

i've never dealt with a bad trip before
never taken lsd
so i had no clue what to do or how to help
it was awful

I don’t think I’d be brave enough to trip alone. But I’ve never had a bad trip. All fun.

Scary about the dad...

oh, i posted about it in OS but i guess i should explain for those that didn't see

my dad had a stroke three weeks ago and is in rehab right now
the rehab place sent him to the emergency room and this is the second time they've told my mom something that caused undue stress
the first they told her his blood pressure was 99/something and that they might need to send him to the hospital

my mom doesn't know anything about bp numbers, so she was worried he had super low blood pressure when he was really fine they just needed to get some fluids in him

and then today telling her they were worried he had another stroke was completely unnecessary
all they had to say was that he was lethargic and they wanted to get him checked out to find the reason

i'm hoping she's no longer that brave now...

she smoked some weed a couple hours into her trip and i think that's when sh-t went sideways
i think the paranoia that it can bring did not mix well with the lsd and she spiraled

jesus

im glad your dad is okay/recovering. sucks that the hospital is jumping the gun but at least they’re being overly cautious instead of the opposite

and taking care of someone on a bad trip is the worst. when i did it for this girl, she was stuck in a time loop for 4 and a half hours and the only things she could say were “nooo” and “come here” and i just had to hold her and (mostly be bored out of my mind as i was also tripping) sit with her and tell her it was all gonna be okay

What a day.
Glad to hear it wasn’t another stroke though.
I only had a bad trip once when I was a dumb teenager and decided it was a good idea to just take a ridulous amount in one go without considering how that would actually go
4 months ago - Friday 2/1/19 - 11:16:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think the same thing happened here
she was wanting to know the time literally every two minutes
time was moving super f-cking slow for her
those two hours i was with her probably felt like four to her

i had to hold her so that she would feel that i was real and not a hallucination

it was terrifying

she said she wouldn't wish that experience on her worst enemy

what a day!

Good job on making it through all that. Hope your dad sees improvement.

as for my dad, other than his lack of energy from not being able to eat well he seems to be progressing really well in his recovery

his right side was almost completely paralyzed
but now he can move his right leg just as well as his left
and he’s even started to move his arm some

the unfortunate thing right now is his communication
it’s hard for him to talk and even when he does it doesn’t necessarily make sense
he knows what he wants to say, but there’s some sort of interruption sometimes that makes him not say the right words

it’s just gonna take time, but he seems to be motivated to put in the work
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 12:15:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
Is that a kind of aphrasia?

I hope he sees some progress with his speech soon, that must be frustrating for him.
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 12:20:41 AM EST (GMT-5)
that’s exactly what it is
it’s gotten a lot better from the beginning

before he was repeating the same thing over and over again

now when he speaks he seems to say what he wants to say more often than not

his voice is just very weak still
and it sometimes takes him a while to get the words out
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 12:37:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
Has he tried writing? Sometimes that comes out a little better, using brain to hand pathways. Sometimes it's not any better though.
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 12:42:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think so
I read something he wrote on his first day or two in rehab and it was just a lot of word repeatings

I haven’t seen anything since then, so I’m not sure how that is

I imagine it would be better now that his brain has had more time to recover
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 12:43:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
The feeding tube will def help him because it sounds like he's not getting enough nourishment. We've had two family members that needed them temporarily and, although they're not fun, they are necessary if you can't swallow well, etc.
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 1:06:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
they made it seem like it wasn’t a huge deal
it’s like a twenty minute surgery to put it in place

and then they just pull it out when it’s no longer needed
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 2:55:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's not a huge deal, but it's a bit uncomfortable for the person wearing it.
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 5:39:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sounds like quite the trip

Sorry I’ll see myself out

I hope for better days to come to you soon.

oh I’m sure it is

I’ll be more comfortable not having to rely on him to eat and drink well to get stronger

I try and look at everyday as a better day since he had that stroke

today is better than yesterday (admittedly a low bar)
tomorrow will be better than today
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 9:04:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
strokes are no f*cking joke
it seems like lots of people in my life have been having them recently

hope your dad does better
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 9:13:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
it sounds like it’s not necessarily avoidable
the older you get the smaller your veins become in your brain

I’m kinda wondering if they should just start people on aspirin once they hit a certain age

or maybe they can see the vein size on an mri or something and just automatically do that test to see if a blood thinner is necessary

also pro tip: if someone in your life starts making weird decisions or starts forgetting things take them to a neurologist asap

we were thinking he was starting to develop dementia or something, but turns out he was having TIAs before having the real stroke

he literally had an appointment scheduled with a neurologist the week after having the stroke to get himself checked out

it sucks he wasn’t able to have that appointment sooner because maybe they could have done something to prevent it

My grandfather had a stroke when I was younger.

Are they saying it was more or less severe than they originally thought?
4 months ago - Saturday 2/2/19 - 10:53:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wrote a paper about strokes in college, because I lost my grandpa to complications from a stroke he had when I was 16. He was 78.
Basically what I’ve found is, the older you are, the higher chance you have for a stroke but a lot of it will also come down to lifestyle choices. My grandpa was a very large man so it’s not surprising something like that happened at that age.
And it can come down to some genetics.

But there’s unfortunately not a whole lot that you can do to prevent a stroke other than try to lead a healthy life.

It’s part of the reason I’ve tried to make lifestyle changes with how much I exercise, since having a relative who had a stoke automatically puts me a generic predisposition to have one at some point.

The human brain is weird.
