I work for an engineering consulting firm that evaluates buildings, roads and bridges. I was just out doing an evaluation on bridges in Kane County. Not good. Illinois has at least 2,000 structurally deficient bridges in need of repair and over 50,000 deficient in the USA. I don’t think anyone even cares until someone dies when the bridge collapses. I’m just venting.

i remember when i was working my first job out of college at a paper mill, that there were two bridges that i needed to cross. and both bridges during my time working there ended up undergoing repair work. it was inconvenient but i understood that it was a good thing in the long run. probably with all the taxes ny is pretty good about that kind of stuff though.

It depends where you live in NY. They have at least 1,500 bridges rated below acceptable

Yeah, our failing infrastructure has been a huge problem for a long time. My ex was an engineer and there was one bridge in Baltimore County that he basically flat-out told me never to drive over. It's actually since been replaced (was high on the priority list even then), but it was on a major road, crossing a major river. Heavily traveled every day by commuters.

yeah western new york does flatten out and get pretty sparse.

i'm on the montreal to nyc line. can't have any coke dealers falling off a bridge.

Its so depressing that we are not investing in our infrastructure. Our sewer and water system are older than bridges and will start failing. Its fine to spend 5 billion to build a meaningless border wall along Mexico but not invest in ourselves.

Have fun with your rust.

Shouldn't the bridge funding be from the state? It shouldn't be an 'either-or' situation with the border wall...

hey cuck have you ever heard "out of the black" from rust never sleeps.

now you have

Yes, and from federal funding also. The Trump admin proposed a cut in federal funds for roads and bridges.

What? No. There is federal spending on infrastructure. It isn't a state-only issue.
(How do you think a lot of this stuff got built in the first place? Genuinely curious.)

Yes, there is federal spending on infrastructure, most notably the Interstate highway system. The funding may or may not cover bridges that are not part of that...

Oh my god please google the New Deal, since your high school teachers apparently completely failed you. We spent significant federal dollars on things like state roads, bridges, schools, courthouses, power grids, etc. in the past, and we could easily do so again.

there is a direct correlation between federal deficit and the health of a free market?

i'm asking. i would assume there would be.

I'm just venting. I see all these threats to shut down the government over funding the border wall but nobody seems concerned about our failing infrastructure.

I'm all for forgetting about the border wall and spending that money on infrastructure instead.

that was one of trump’s main campaign promises
putting a bunch of money toward infrastructure

I’ve yet to see him even come close to starting that process

Oh great, thanks.

This is one of my fears. I HATE going over bridges and there are MANY here with all these dang rivers!

We have the same problem.

Apparently you don’t get re elected if you plan to maintain infrastructures in a decent shape.

Because muh tax cuts are more important.

Study from the Illinois Economic Policy Institute “The rapidly deteriorating condition of Illinois roads, bridges, and transit systems is producing increased congestion and vehicle maintenance costs, and the annual cost of needed repairs currently stands at $4.6 billion per year”

“Approximately 62% of the state’s bridges are over 30 years old, with roughly a third more than 50 years old and having “exceeded their design life.”

1 month ago - Tuesday 12/18/18 - 6:29:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
“With the Trump Administration’s infrastructure proposal offering few federal funds and emphasizing state and local revenue streams, Illinois would need to generate more than $4.6 billion per year to bring all statewide transportation systems into a state of good repair. The report notes this would require a 347% increase in gasoline taxes and 365% increase in special fuel taxes, a 472% increase in vehicle registration fees, or a 4-5 cents per mile user fee charged to each Illinois driver.”

Maybe somebody sells parachutes for cars when a bridge falls down.

God, I'd rather not know that bridges could be failing. Luckily I don't have to drive over any in my daily routines.
