I'm considedring using my inheritance money to go abroad but I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm the only person (excluding babies) in my family that has never been out of the country before.

My grandad left me a bit of money (not much but enough to pay for a holiday) and a holiday abroad is one of the options I am weighing up. The problem is I don't really know what things I need to consider for going abroard.

I'm specifically thinking of Scandanavia/Nordic countries, to see the Northern Lights. I'm not a fan of melting so those hot places in Europe don't interest me much.

One of my friends is half Icelandic and her dad runs a B&B in Rekjavic so that is an option if I need to cut costs but long weekends are pretty cheap up there anyway.

So yeah, what things do I need to consider before going abroard?

*Reykjavik

Damn I was close.

I've tried googling but it just says things like making sure your passport is in date and don't carry money belts.

I want to know what to about money. Do you just take a debit card, or get some money exchanged before you go?

How much do you take?

What about using mobile data and the horrific roaming charges?

Passports for everyone.

I know it's basic, but you need a comfortable 6-8 weeks to do this without sitting in a passport office all day.

Check if your phone has EU roaming deals - 3 allow you to use partner networks for no extra cost.

Iceland is V expensive with regards to food and drink. Have a look and budget!

[I tend to take some Euro or whatever, and pull some out of cashpoints, when I go abroad.]

I got a specific travel money card from my bank - if I'd have used my credit card the fees would have been higher, and also I could transfer money using online banking so I never had much on there at a time (in case the card was skimmed or stolen)
I also had some money exchanged so I'd have cash.
So basically talk to your bank and find out what fees would be charged on your card, and see if they have a better alternative.

I don't know what options are available to you regarding mobile data. When I was in the US I got a sim that T-Mobile have specifically for travellers. It was much cheaper than roaming charges

Also, if you go to Iceland far, far up north, you'll need super warm clothing. The stuff you get in the UK might not keep you cosy - many layers, thermals, etc.

If I do go, I hope to go around this time next year so I still have a bit of time to sort things out.

The cost of food and drink is something I was thinking about so thanks Chips.

I'll speak to the bank about charges. Thanks, Hammy.

My husband and I were planning a trip to Iceland before baby came along. Hopefully we can do a few days once baby is a bit older and we're more comfortable with the idea of leaving him with grandma.

Go to Iceland and tell us of your journeys. I would so love to go there, but the cost is huge. It will be years before I get my chance. Bring stories.
