This weekend was the annual open house for a dear family friend's pottery studio. So my mom and I took a little jaunt down some *very* winding roads, farther south and west into the Appalachians.

Here's our view of Mt. Rogers, the highest peak in the state of VA:

Aside from making pottery, our friend is one of the sweetest and most talented banjo players I have the pleasure of knowing. Yes, for those who frequent the News forum, she does in fact have all her teeth, and is not married to her brother. Thank you for asking.

Some of the glazes she didn't have full dish sets of. I love that one on the bottom.

Some full sets/other odd pieces:

My favorite glaze/pattern, since I don't have hundreds of $$ to spend on dish sets, and only have odd pieces here and there:

I am more envious of this bathroom sink than I have ever been of any home furnishing, I think.

Those are cool.

And I posted this in the OS shopping thread, but I came home with a yarn bowl.

Then we had pulled pork sandwiches that had been slow-cooking all day, took the long way home, got stuck behind two tractors for about five miles and got to enjoy all the scenery, and ended up tangled up in the smallest-town Veterans Day parade you can imagine. The Shriners in go-karts were an especially excellent addition.

I love her work. She just started out doing it as a hobby about 18 years ago when her kids were little, and now it's basically a full-time business.
My mom has been slowly collecting a full dish set from her over the years (in a different glaze, one that she's mostly discontinued now). There's always a Christmas gift or two from there every year, but I usually can't make the open house.

This place we ate is a general store and lunch counter. She only has the pulled pork one day a week, so we got super lucky. It's regionally famous, haha.

I'm glad to hear the shriners still do the go carts.

Wait is that a common/known thing?! We had no idea what they were until Mom pointed out the little hats they were wearing. From a distance, we thought we had accidentally gotten in the middle of a go-kart race or something. But no. Little old men in funny hats haha. They were zipping around in those things, though!

I saw them in every parade back home when I was a kid. Small town. Must be a country thing.

Wild. I knew other places had them, but I never knew about the go-kart thing!
(My town is smallish, but not as small as Rural Retreat. I mean "rural" is literally in the name...)

And the pottery is lovely

Yeah, they even drove tiny semi-truck looking vehicles where I'm from, lol.

omg this is gold

Mom and I were already just dying giggling at them in the little karts. We had no idea it was a common thing among Shriners. They were really into it, though! Like zipping around in circles in the middle of the road and stuff. Like kids on a go-kart track.

That's a pretty bathroom sink.
Also, someone donated staff at work some yarn and knitting needles, the yarn looked like those "cakes" you posted in OS and I thought of you.
Driving through the mountains with your mother (when it's a good relationship) sounds like a pretty ideal weekend. Jealous!
