I'm about to color my mom's hair, and I know not what to doooo!

She doesn't even know what to doooo!

We are clueleeeeeesss!

The lady at Sallys gave her what she needed, and sent her on her way without further instructions!

My mom has gray that she wants me to cover with a hair dye that is close to her own natural hair color. So no bright pink or electric blue, sadly.

BUT.

Do I wash my mom's hair before hand? It hasn't been washed in awhile, and its quite dry.
What does 'appropriate' shampoo mean? I have a hydrating mango butter shampoo. Will that work?
Can I just hit the areas that need coloring, or do I have to color the entire head?

I'm a lost sheep. Dazed, and alone.

I never wash before dyeing because the oils are good for the process. I always use a kit which makes it easy. What did your mum get? A applicator brush?

Also if she's getting it coloured for the first time I think all over. If this is a touch up job then you would be okay doing just the roots

She got a tube of color and a bottle of developer. Both are by the same brand, and the lady at Sallys was the one who picked it out for her. Its a 20 developer.

Hmm, does the tube have a direction on how much developer to use with it?

Usually, I've used kits for colors and it's already measured out.

When I bleach, I use a scoop of bleach powder and 2 oz. developer (the big developer bottles are meant for several uses).

You need some gloves. A squirt bottle would be nice. I mix the stuff together and sort of slather it on all my hair until all the strands are coated. Wait until the time is up, rinse with water in the shower.

tbh, if anything's unclear, I would call or go back to Sallys for further instructions. Once you know the process it's easy, but idk about a random tube, unknown quantity of developer, and how long she should leave it on.

Appropriate shampoo to me would be a shampoo for color treated hair. They're gentler to avoid stripping the color. The conditioner is more important. She'll need a good moisturizing conditioner because dyes dry your hair.

Yeah, there should be a ratio of color:developer on the color tube.
20 is the most commonly-used developer level, as long as you're staying close to your natural color (not much darker or lighter). So you should be fine. The higher the number, the higher the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, which is what's pulling out some of the natural pigment to allow the color to set.

Remember that grey hairs are really white. They have no pigment to speak of, and are also coarser than pigmented hair, so dyes can act differently on them. You definitely should NOT just color the grey hairs and leave the rest. The color she ends up with may not match her natural hair exactly.

Start at the roots. This is "new hair" and isn't as prone to taking color. It can and does take longer for color to process on roots than on ends.

Use gloves and don't wear anything you care about. You WILL get dye on it.

Ooh, I've always had the opposite effect with roots- they take color or bleach much faster than the rest of my hair because of the scalp heat.

So I've had that issue too, but only when I was trying to go lighter or redder (especially redder). Every time I've done a darker brown, or one with more blonde undertones than my natural, I've done roots first with good result.

My mom uses Henna on her white hairs... idk if it hekps, never dyed my hair...

Okay! Thanks guys for the info! I get kinda nervous when I have to do chemistry on someone else's head. Lol.

The company that makes the dye, printed the instructions INSIDE the box that it came in, which meant I had to rip into the box and some of the instructions became torn. There are no instructions on the tube of dye or the developer. Who does that?!
I spent 3 hours last night untangling her hair (and accidentally cut a huge chunk out. ) so this morning I'm just going to slather it on, and hope for the best!

One thing I always do to prevent any excess dye from getting on my face/ears is rub the edges of my face, tops/behind my ears with vaseline.

I tried that! It worked. The whole thing was a success. :)

I did not. I was kinda done with it all, once finished. Doing anything with my mom is a process.
