Odds of being struck by lightning — 1 in 114,195

What is the closest you’ve ever been to a lightning strike?

Where do you live?
Over here the odds of being struck by lightning are more like 1: 6,000,000!

Hmm, thinking of it, this could be the number for being struck in a certain year, not during your whole lifetime.

After learning about ball lightning, I try to stay inside when it rains. Don't want balls of lightning following me a round

My dad has seen ball lightning…inside his grandmother's kitchen.

Never got even close.

I'm annoyed with this thread on two counts:

One, that link broke it on mobile and makes everything all tiny.

Two, that link has some uhhhh very dubious stats, 2 out of 3 drivers will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime? Wtf?

1 in 36 chance of being on the price is right? Come on

See, that's what I'm saying. I think this link has taken real statistics and presented them in extremely inaccurate ways. Like if you're actually ON the Price is Right, your odds of being called to "come on down" are probably 1 in 36.

Remind me of the old email forward that said different weird stats plus adult accidentally eating x number of spiders in their lifetime.

Turns out someone made that up as an experiment.

I followed the link about "2 out of 3 people will be involved in a drunk driving accident" and it goes to MADD. They in turn cite the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but inconveniently don't link to the survey/study. And the address they provide, http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/8... goes to 404 not found.

Sooo yeah. Huge surprise, some random site doesn't do a good job fact-checking and citing primary sources.

I was no more than about 10 ft away.

We were having a really terrible thunderstorm and lightning hit our front door and fireplace. We thought we could smell smoke but it was just the Ash in the fireplace. The strike split the fireplace from the wall and it was never fixed the whole time we were renting there. My mom turned it into a giant candle holder.

Neither of those are primary sources (google isn't even a source at all…)

The National Weather Service (aka people who study this stuff) says it's more like 1 in 14,000 over your lifetime.

One time some lightning thought about striking me but then had a crisis of conscience and changed its mind.

I didn’t think I needed to double check a statistic like that. Who’da thunk there’d be that much discrepancy.

I must play an awful lot of poker. No surprise there either.

In all fairness, the most recent (and 2nd overall) was playing pai-gow poker where 7 cards are dealt to each player and there is one joker in the deck. Still pretty long odds.

Well, their TV didn't quite work right after that. Sometimes it would turn on by itself in the middle of the night and stuff like that. But that also could've been totally unrelated, since this was around the late '50s (Dad was a kid, but adults saw the lightning too, so he wasn't making it up).

Interesting article. thanks for the link. I never unplugged anything. Maybe I will now.

"Surge protectors do not protect against direct lightning strikes. Unplug equipment such as computers and televisions."
