What's your favourite traditional Christmas song? Non-traditional?

How about Christmas movie?

Silent Night will always be my favorite Christmas song despite me not being religious.

But only if it’s in full four part harmony with an accompanying orchestra.

I'm not a religious person but my family likes to have their traditional Christmas eve so I actually do sing carols myself and the one I enjoy most singing with my girls (who are - contrary to me - great singers and have no problem singing three part harmonies) is an old German traditional called "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging". I'm not sure what it's called in English or if there even is an English version of it.

In regard to English carols I'd choose "Hark! The herals angels sing".

I'm not a fan of real Christmas movies if you don't count Die Hard and the like ...

Matthias, that one is called "When Mary Walked through Woods of Thorn" in English. It isn't common for congregations to sing as a hymn (at least anywhere I've been), but I've done it in choirs. Beautiful.

Also at your "English" choice. (It's still German lol)

What? I thought it was by Charles Wesley. Is that just an adaptation of a German carol??
Never heard it in German.

Oh, I see. Apparently it has some Mendelssohn in it ...

i like christmas movies that take place at christmas but barely reference it, like eyes wide shut or in bruges

I'd say my favorite Christmas movie is Christmas Vacation.
After that, probably Home Alone, then Gremlins. Or possibly reverse those two.

I'm a fussy traditionalist when it comes to Christmas carols and songs like if I could never hear Michael Bublé or Pentatonix again in my life, that'd be fantastic.
I have a list of favorites but want to put links to them so it'll have to wait.

please daddy don’t get drunk this Christmas, I don’t wanna see my momma cry

I remember singing this as a drunk 10 year old. It’s happy memories.

Seems darker now because I realise my family is just prone to addiction, but at the time I loved singing that song

I also love Winter Wonderland
And importantly...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

(I think those loves came from watching home alone, but I’m not sure)

I also love jingle bell rock because you sing it all relaxed like and then yell “ROCK!”
At the end of the line

Drummer boy is pretty good too

And I like silent night
Because of the rabbit I live with and all the lyrics apply to her, especially the “asleep in the hay” part.

There are Greensleeves words ("alas, my love, you do me wrong, to cast me off discourteously") and Christmas songs ("what child is this who laid to rest in Mary's lap is sleeping?")

Today I heard o holy night while driving. I was in the country and going around a very long bend, and saw a flock of geese flying really close to my vehicle. The scenery and music gave me hard asmr. My whole body tingled. I thought I was going to cry. Very happy.
