How much weight do you put into reviews or movies, music, games, television, or books?

The older I get the less I trust any sort of reviews. The only ones I really pay attention to are game reviews. Mostly to make sure the functionality of the game is good and they are not ripping me off with pay to win micro-transactions.

The last music review I read they spent 3 paragraphs talking about the band and the past and a small paragraph about the album. The one before that was so pretentious and "look at how smart I am" that I had to stop reading.

Just wondering what you guys think.

i use an aggregate and rarely read the written review.

or what i do is i find something that interests me on the aggregate. listen to it. and then if i like it i read the reviews.

it's just a stimulus response game.

My daily newspaper has had some reviews for movies and books I found helpful. Other than that there's not much I'd trust to meet my personal taste.

I like to read about what people think about certain movies or tv shows or whatever, but it doesn’t factor in to whether I enjoy something or not

now if it’s a reviewer I respect and they write that a video game or movie is bad, then I’ll likely hold off on seeing the movie or might never buy the game

I don't read any music reviews except this one guy from my work who writes long rambling reviews of obscure albums he loves. They're really good to read and every time I think damn I need to listen to that album it sounds like the most incredible experience, but I've never actually listened to any of the albums.

At this point, I think the music would ruin the reviews for me, rather than the other way around.

I’ve never found a music review to be helpful

these particular music reviews are their own art form, the music doesn't even need to exist

I don't like reading written reviews for movies and things because it does effect how I watch it and what I'm thinking about/noticing while watching it too much. If I read a negative review, I'll be looking out for the negative things commented on, or the positive or whatever it was and it does bias me and makes me wonder if I do actually know what I personally think of it.

Music review make me not like music.

When they talk about the laziness of a musician I just assume they have never written a song in their life.

There are some critics I respect. But most I look at them like people who are not talented enough to create so instead they just latch on and judge.

I don't read any reviews of entertainment ever. What's the point? I only read things after I've consumed it, and then only if there was something I wanted to delve into deeper.

Before letting my kid watch some movies I read Christian movie reviews because they will let me know how much violence, swearing, and sex to expect to better help me decide if my kiddo will be comfortable watching it.

I also usually glance at the rotten tomatoes percentages. If it's like <20% I might reconsider and/or skip it but if there's something I really like (a director, writer, or actor) it doesn't really matter

yeah I check general star ratings all the time. if it's a movie/show I've never heard of, know nothing about, but there is nothing that makes me particularly personally interested in it, I just want to know if it's worth a go

How about that? We do have something in common...

Reviews are generally not all that useful for me in deciding to read a book or not...

I like reviews from real people about products I am considering buying.

I like star and % reviews for movies.

Music: I prefer the pre-review. Great way to discover new artists.

I read reviews to see the genre and if there are glitches (in games, and have a glimpse of the contrast between users and « pros » reviews.

I never read wiki entries before because they don’t spoiler anything. (Imo, just because it’s supposed to be an encyclopedia doesn’t mean you have to put everything (gossip included))

I never never read reviews of plays in production I am currently involved in.

I miss cmj reviews, they were very technical.

Great thread idea, btw.

I don't and have never paid attention to music reviews.

I listen to a movie review podcast sometimes by one of my favorite singers and a friend of his and I've actually been tuned in to some great movies that would not have ever registered on my radar otherwise, but they are not super serious movie reviewers, it's like listening to a couple of friends casually talk about what they saw and what they did or didn't like.

Reviews for products, I do pay attention to as I don't like to waste money on crap.

I will sometimes read music reviews if they're written up by someone whose writing I enjoy, or if it's for a friend's album. It's not really to help decide if I want to buy something, though, I just read them as a form of non-political opinion writing (because I feel confident in having informed opinions about music, so my agreement/disagreement isn't just knee-jerk "but I like/dislike it," I can dig into specifics).

Movie reviews are pretty useless to me, but I'll sometimes check aggregate star ratings if I'm thinking of going to see something on a whim and haven't heard much about it (don't have a TV, so I select-watch certain shows and see very few commercials and trailers).

My program was written up 3x in local/regional papers last year, and I straight-up didn't read the second & third ones. Even though they weren't "reviews," they still kind of FELT like reviews of my work.

Ragdoll I watched Solo this weekend. I remember there being a bad buzz around it.

Best Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi in my book.

I never got (and never will) a chance to read any reviews of my old bands work. I kind of wanted to hear what a real review said.

So I could laugh at them.

These were very positive human-interest pieces, just to be clear. Nothing even close to a "review". It just felt f*cking weird to read the first one, so I skipped the second and third. I looked at the pictures, though.

Yay!

Solo is great, imo. I will also always have a soft spot for it as it's the first SW movie I saw in the theater.
