We tried to separate them before but because of the overflow in general waste we just had bags of waste sitting around waiting for the rest to be collected.

Also, do you have to separate your recyclables or do they all get mixed together?

We separate, but my grandparents have a huge recycling bin where everything gets thrown in together. I think it encourages people to recycle more.

apartment now: dumpster, emptied weekly. no recycling program.

my mom's house, not far away: 3 different receptacles for regular, yard waste, and recyclables. Once a week pickup.

Weekly

Food and garden waste
Recyclable
Non recycalable

We can request a larger bin if we need it.

You are supposed to pay for large items of furniture to be taken but everyone just dumps them in a certain spot and they are taken faster than if you order a collection.
28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 2:17:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
We got moved to collection every two weeks a few years ago - then the bin was swapped for one half the size.

It's *nearly* adequate right now, recycling what I can (paper/card, tins), but nappies or another person would make it impossible. No wonder private companies are already starting to become popular!
28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 3:12:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
We just have a black bin (general waste) and a green bin (recyclable waste). Even then, the recycling bin is only really for cardboard and plastic bottles. There is no collection for glass, garden waste or anything like that. You can pay to have garden waste collected though as well as furniture and other large items.
28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 5:02:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
Our council is forward thinking. They realise that if they charge people for collecting garden waste, they will just burn it.
28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 5:12:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
Trash and recycling gets picked up weekly on the same day every week. We have a rolling trash can for trash and one for recycling and all recycling gets mixed in together, but we normally just recycle boxes.

We don't have municipal trash pick up here, there's a company who does it and we pay them quarterly, I believe.
28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 6:23:05 PM EST (GMT-5)

Weekly garbage pick up, that's right, garbage.

Recycling is every two weeks.

Yard waste is scheduled monthly.

28 days ago - Monday 10/23/17 - 6:53:04 PM EST (GMT-5)

Green waste (green lid) and Recycling (yellow lid) emptied alternate fortnights and general waste (red lid) emptied every week.

We are all supposed to compost as well, we do, I have even been nagging for an extra compost bin.

Hard rubbish once a year by booking and large garden waste 4 times a year by booking.

Our city has mixed. It does make things easier.

Our yard waste goes in the organics bin.

I forgot to mention that I think we have 4 large item pickups a yeast but you have to schedule them. People Are super lazy and just put them on the street often.

and even if you do that, the diaper is still going to have residue..which is going to smell....even stale pee smells..

Especially cooped up in a closed plastic bin on a hot day..

Sounds like another good reason to cloth diaper. Honestly, the number of diapers that must be in landfills makes me queasy.

we always used cloth diapers on my nieces and nephews..and only used disposable for outings...it makes sense, and saves money

When our time comes, I wonder what they'll use on us?

I have to walk a 1/4 of a mile to take my trash out.

I haven't been able to empty mine for a week because of a-holes moving out and throwing their entire apartment into the dumpsters. Which they are not supposed to do and get charged up the ass for.

I live in an apartment with "Trash Valet" service. I can set my trashcan out Sun-Thurs on my doorstep and the service will come take the bag. There's pretty strict rules about when it has to be set out and brought back in and it can only be one bag per evening and only weigh a certain amount.

It's $35 extra a month (whether I use it or not) and I've come to appreciate it since I'm on the 3rd floor. It's easier than lugging it down stairs and to the compactor on the other side of the complex.

But I hate that there's no way to recycle through the service.

Maybe the valet service sorts through your trash and recyles what they can. They may have to do that to keep down the costs of disposing of it.

We used to have valet trash and they definitely did not sort and recycle

They might not but the place where they take it to might.

I read somewhere that locally you have to sign up to a special nappy disposal system with the council, so your not allowed to put used nappies in the main bin anymore.

We recycle everything that we can.

Recycling and compostable waste is collected every week (Although they encourage you to use a compost bin in the garden if you do gardening)
Main bin, garden clippings and recycling is collected every two weeks.

Remember though, if your main bin is getting filled with recyclables, then may be worth finding where your local dump is and take it there, they should have recycling facilities there for you to use.

Also have you contacted the local council to arrange bin delivery? They wont just deliver to a new resident, you have to request them, and I think they only deliver on specific weeks of the month

Also we use 6 different bags/boxes for our recyclables.

Black box for textiles and paper
green box for glass.
Grey box for food waste (two of them, kitchen and garden one)
Small bag for batteries
bag for plastics and cans
bag for cardboard.

We requested bins a few weeks before we moved in. They never came. So we ordered them again. Finally got it sorted and had to wait another 2 weeks before our first pick up. I asked about the nappy thing and they said they go in the general waste but if we had two children in nappies they would give us a second trash bin. I like that we have a recycling box for textiles and electronics. That's something I've never had before!
