I believe in the slap on the wrist, not to inflict pain, but as a code for bad/wrong.

Nothing else.

But the sh-t I saw in classrooms.

I remember one year, going to a new school, my dad telling the principal that the teachers were not allowed to hit me.

I had a teacher that would walk up and down the aisles spraying an aerosolized ammonia gas until everyone stopped talking. Not sure if that counts as physical abuse, but it sure did suck.
We used to dream of Ammonia gas. Our teachers had an old stock of Xyclon B

my parents went to school under teachers who would paddle unruly students. i don't think they went any further than that.

i don't think corporal punishment should be the first resort, but rather a step taken when all other sorts of corrective action have failed.

i had a teacher who kicked a kid once. He was sitting on the floor and she just booted him in the back, in front of everyone and other teachers. She had to make an apology and speak in front of everyone, but kept her job.
another time she hurled one of those octopus massage things at a kid's head.
She was seriously unhinged.
still is. sometimes I check her Facebook
For you old folks I guess it was the done thing and accepted a lot of the time, but this woman just had a violent streak and couldn't control her temper.
I have no idea how she didn't get fired.

she also belittled me because of the way I spoke as a kid. Tell me to stop talking like that and I'm all, lady, I literally can't, this is how I talk.

admittedly those were the only two words I would repeat over and over, and I can see how it may become frustrating, but I couldn't help it.

Just watched a video on Facebook with a woman beating a small boy (maybe 4-5) with a belt and so many comments saying that he probably deserves it. All "funny" and "love" and "like" emoji reactions.

(it was because he didn't get his backpack the first time she asked. Beaten with a belt.)

That's something I'd remind my teenage child of when they get cheeky.

It's about to get outlawed in Scotland and hopefully the rest of the UK will follow suit.

Say what you like about Nicola Crankey, much of her social policy is spot on.
