This was a pretty good year for movies, Hollywood hit their yearly benchmark of so many billion earlier in the season than expected

I haven't seen tons of movies this year and I'll probably spend the beginning of this year catching up but from what I have seen some of my favorites are Sausage Party, Rogue One and Jungle Book.

What were your favorites, what were the biggest disappointments, what did you expect to suck but turned out actually good?

And what are some good horror movies from last year?

neon demon is easily my favourite movie in forever
i understand it may not appeal to many people as much, but it just hit all of my marks and i couldn't get enough of it

I haven't seen either of those. I'll check them out. Are either of them on Netflix or other legal streaming?

I really liked Manchester by the Sea.

Amazing performances by all three main characters, and a slow burn of a story that had the whole auditorium gasping at the big reveal.

If Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams aren't Oscar nominated, I'd be amazed. Anyway, it's got great comedy amidst real pain. It feels really natural.

I think the hipster view is that this is Lonergan at his most entry level, but for me, it was a bit like The Assassination of Jesse James - a long, slow, good-looking film that I just fell into and was completely absorbed by.

Also, the end scene is just the most unbearable, uncomfortable invitation to lunch I've ever seen.

how much other lonergan even is there?
i saw the long version of margaret but is there even anything else?

I don't think I saw that many movies this year. I really wanted to see Manchester by the sea, but didn't get to!

Off the top of my head I saw
Fantastic Beasts (enjoyed it, big HP fan)
Me Before You (made me tear up like the girl I am)
Girl on the Train (Emily Blunt did a good job)
Collateral Beauty (I enjoyed it, but it was a little...sappy?)

There might be more..

I didn't see much of the 2016 movies, but Rogue One was the best from what I saw.

Deadpool was highly over-rated.

The Jungle Book was better than expected.

Captain America: Civil War was pretty good.

I didn't see that many movies that came out this year. Off the top of my head, I saw:

The Revenant
Deadpool
Finding Dory

That's it and I loved them all.

I enjoyed Kubo and the Two Strings. I watch a lot of animated movies so I really appreciated seeing something different in terms of style and substance.

I only remember
The Revenant
Fantastic Beasts
Paterson
Colonia Dignidad
as English langauge movies. They were all ok. None of them was great.

Of the 2 German language movies I recall
Toni Erdmann
was really great and
Tschick
was nice.

I really liked that one. I'm curious if anybody outside Germany finds it even slightly funny or good in any other way.
