Aren't these guys hauling zillions in.
I don't want to see them end but workers need to be fairly compensated for their time.

They have actually been losing billions...

From the article:

"And even under contract worker model, there is little evidence that Uber and Lyft have a sustainable business model. Together, they lost a staggering $11.1 billion last year and another $3.3 billion in this year’s first quarter before the full force of the pandemic took hold. It’s likely they would have to raise fares soon anyway."

...of course, the article is an opinion piece rather than actual news reporting, so take it for what it's worth.

The facts of the article are indisputable.

The state of California will not abide by the abuse of its citizens by these companies.

Why are you ok with exploitation and oppression, CowDung?

People working for Uber or Lyft can take it or leave it. Nobody is forcing them to drive people around.

That's the appeal of the contract model- - drivers are free to drive as much or as little as they want and when they want. Regular employees generally don't enjoy such flexibility.

You both are wrong. The drivers are being exploited by these ride-share companies. Their compensation is paltry, many can't make ends meet, and there are no benefits.

Their participation as drivers is completely voluntary. They can always seek regular employment if that is more suitable for their needs...

Absolutely NO ONE I know who works Uber/Lyft want to be considered employees. They want to stay independent contractors.

None of the studies I've seen come to that conclusion.

They want protections and a living wage.

Not around here. People around here only want to do it when it's busy. Nobody wants to work midweek around here - no business.

Yeah, the only times I've taken them is to/ from the airport which is no longer a thing.

They are (were) nice for going out nights- - don't have to worry about drinking and driving...

Mormons make excellent DDs. No uber/ Lyft needed

Time to clean up quickly and get to the bar. Thanks for the reminder

While I agree Uber keeps a lion share, I think it's better for the drivers to be self employed. They can make deductions on their vehicle expenses.

My problem with Uber is the unfair competition to taxis in major cities. Areas not deserved by large cab companies would be fine.

Around here Lyft is a WAY better deal than cabs - like 1/2 the price or better.

Could explain why they are losing so much money as a business...
3 months ago - Saturday 8/22/20 - 3:18:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Here in suburbia, the cabs only run occasionally and a trip across town is $30+

An uber ride late at night can cost 25% of a black cab in London. Most people who would use an uber would not use a Black Cab, they would take a night us or tube instead. 4 people on the tube would cost more than an uber in a lot of cases.

With covid, I don't trust the buses / trains to get around right now. I'm glad I live in a state that still has both services, because I'm not sure what I'd do without them.

Have you been doing without them since you don't trust them in the Covid world?

There have been times where I need to use uber to get to important appointments (dentist, doctor, etc). I trust those drivers to keep their cars cleaner than I trust our bus system. Sometimes Uber/Lyft are all I have.
