Donald Trump has suggested November's presidential election be postponed, saying increased postal voting could lead to fraud and inaccurate results.

He floated a delay until people could "properly, securely and safely" vote.

There is little evidence to support Mr Trump's claims but he has long railed against mail-in voting which he has said would be susceptible to fraud.

US states want to make postal voting easier due to public health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Under the US constitution, Mr Trump does not have the authority to postpone the election himself. Any delay would have to be approved by Congress. The president does not have direct power over the two houses of Congress.

Is anyone really surprised at this point?

This must be one of the other things he "doesn't really mean." We should ask amaq to be sure, though.

I’m not surprised. Trump has spent his whole administration delegitimizing truth. This is just another example of him gaslighting the country for personal gain, and his enablers will spread his BS about voter fraud and further his agenda of delegitimizing truth. Just look at all the sh*t on this side about “both sides” whenever a problem predominantly associated with the right comes up. Or look at all the people on this site who try to give equal weight to the BS spread by Trump and the opinions & conclusion of actual scientists.

(When Trump spreads a conspiracy theory about the virus that is contradicted by Fauci or some other epidemiologist, it’s not a matter of one person’s opinion versus another person’s opinion. Those opinions aren’t of equal weight. One is based on evidence and backed by an expert. The other is backed by nothing and spread by someone who saw some...

personal or political advantage in spreading that particular lie or who was just swept up in an impulse.)

Accusations of mail-in-voting fraud are no different.

There is an actual database that tracks real cases of voter fraud. In the last 20 years, over 250,000,000 votes have been cast by mail. There have been 143 instances of fraud in mail-in-voting. That’s not an average every year. That’s total over the last 20 years. That’s 0.00006% of more than 250,000,000 votes.

So when Trump claims there will be thousands of instances of voter fraud if more people vote by mail, it is not backed by facts. It’s not based in reality. His claim is not equal to the opinion of actual experts in voting security.

But that is just the number who have been caught. Everybody knows that last election there wereexactly 3 million fake democrat postal votes from Hilary's super secret pizza basement base

Keep in mind trump appointed one of his campaign supporters (who has zero mailing and shipping knowledge) to postmaster General in June when Meghan Brennan retired.
He'll have his cluster drat of mail in voting but it'll be self created.

How many mail-in votes will be "lost" until after the decision happens?

After the election of 1864, Abraham Lincoln responded to critics who had suggested that it be postponed. “It has long been a grave question whether any government, not too strong for the liberties of its people, can be strong enough to maintain its own existence in great emergencies,” he wrote. “But,” he continued, “the election was a necessity. We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us.”

The actual point of these tweets (and things he and other GOPers have been saying for months) is to cast doubt on the election outcome due to mail-in voting (which has existed for over a hundred years). He's terrified of losing and is trying everything possible to be able to claim he didn't "really lose".

Traditionally the mail-In votes have been mostly Republican. You’d think he’d want the mail-in votes.

If he wanted a good reason to delay the election he could easily have said due to coronavirus and not even mention mail-in votes. But even that is not worthy of delaying the election. People can vote with masks on and hand sanitizers. It would be just like a trip to the grocery store.

Higher voter participation is a sign of a Democrat victory. In the middle of a pandemic, more people will use vote by mail as opppsed to going to a polling place

Most polling place workers are over 65. Saying it's "just like a trip to the grocery store" doesn't even begin to express the risk it would be for workers. My mother had never skipped working an election since Carter, until this spring primary. She hasn't been inside a grocery store since March. She's who you're talking about staffing this "regular trip to the grocery store."

The Donald needs to get some tips from Big Daddy Xi

"Hong Kong postpones legislative election for a year citing Covid-19"
Link

Hong Kong is dead. The only path forward is total disengagement with the PRC and the CCP.

Maybe Donald's poll numbers will look better in November 2021. Or 2022. Or 2023. Or 2024.

On in-person elections, I would also say that in fact it's NOT "just like a trip to the grocery store." In quite a lot of precincts around here, it's impossible to practice social distancing. We are using buildings that are normally used for other purposes, and aren't necessarily ideal for having large groups move through while everybody stays at least six feet from each other. In my precinct in particular, that's actually impossible to do because of how it's set up. It's never been that big a deal before, but we've also never tried to vote large numbers of people during a pandemic before.

So you agree with Trump that the election should be postponed? Until when?
10 days ago - Friday 7/31/20 - 11:53:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure how it is other places, but even if you request a mail-in ballot here, you can drop it off at a certain location instead of mailing it if you don't trust the USPS because this administration is attempting to cripple it for obvious reasons.

I think the location is considerably far from our house, but we'll make the drive if we're at all wary it won't make it in time.

Absolutely not, and nothing about my posts implies that.

There should be no-excuse absentee/mail-in voting in all 50 states + all territories.

I'm still upset they couldn't get anyone better than Biden. Really makes me want to get off my ass and vote.

No one will vote for Biden, just against Trunp

I know this is popular to say, but it also just isn't true. There are millions of people out there who like Biden. They're why he won the primary.

There is no "they" to "get a candidate." It's the people who vote and decide which candidate they want. We are not still in the '60s, when a bunch of guys smoke cigars and pick whoever's next in line.

Did you vote in the democratic primary?
10 days ago - Friday 7/31/20 - 1:14:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I like Biden, full stop.

If you're asking me which of these two candidates might just give a sh*t about the people he's representing? No contest.
