I will not be staying up until everything comes in. But we had a highly successful day in my precinct, with 33.5% turnout. Not bad for no federal races!

OF NOTE:

Virginia: control of both state houses (General Assembly and State Senate) is up for grabs. GA was the one that, in '17, came down to one single race, which in turn came down to...a coin toss. The ultimate "yes, every vote matters" race. Republicans have a narrow majority in both now, but Democrats have held the state executive offices for eight years.

Kentucky: race to unseat Matt Bevin, the current R governor. He's one of the most unpopular governors, partly because he wants to roll back Medicaid expansion. The race is closer than a Democrat has gotten in KY in a loooong time, and people's lives and health care literally hang in the balance.

Also of note in VA:
Some DA races where localities could elect some very reform-minded candidates
Local stuff basically everywhere/too much to list, but some challengers to ICE-friendly sheriffs, etc. that could be important because of where they are

Also in KY:
The other state offices (AG and Secretary of State). I believe both have already been won by the GOP, but not 100% sure they're called. If they both win and Bevin LOSES (KY does not elect a ticket; all are individual races), that is a HUGE...well, "f*ck you" to him, frankly. Turnout in KY is pretty huge, and it seems like that may be the wave to take him out.

Yeah, I think everybody has it as "too close to call." Beshear was winning HUGE in some key areas, and losing by quite a bit less than he was supposed to in a lot of deep red/coal country ones. Like...losing by 9% instead of 19%, and winning Louisville area, etc. by like 14% instead of 2% that was expected.

NBC News is calling Beshear the "apparent winner" (which I think is a lower-confidence declaration). The margin is SO thin. Just doing the math rq, looks like it could fall within the 0.5% automatic recount margin. Kind of depends on how the 1% remaining precincts (and probably absentees) come in.

Kentucky went for Trump by THIRTY POINTS.

Holy sh*t.

If you're Mitch McConnell, I think you're f*cking nervous tonight.

I'm not sure which race tipped it, but AP is calling a Democratic flip of the VA state senate. I think this is the first time the GOP hasn't controlled it since before I could vote (ditto the GA). Both have been heavily gerrymandered - in '17, Democrats got several hundred thousand more votes statewide, yet still didn't gain a majority in either.

That's great news. Especially for when redistricting occurs.
1 month ago - Tuesday 11/5/19 - 10:10:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
Democrats have (so far) flipped three state senate seats, which is one more than they needed for control. There are 18 uncalled races, but the statewide trend has been very, very blue. So it seems reasonable that that might hold.

While we're here, and there aren't any more big results coming in, shout out to the guy who asked a coworker of mine "why can't I vote for Trump this year" while LITERALLY WEARING A TRUMP 2020 HAT ON HIS OWN HEAD. We have all been asked a lot of weird questions at the polls, but that beats all.

The Trump worship is intense.

It really is. I'll never know if he was the same guy who wrote in Trump for every single race, but in my mind, he totally is.

The KY GOV race is huge for voting rights. Over 300,000 people can't vote in KY because of previous felony convictions, and that includes one in four black (potential) voters. Beshear promised to restore voting rights, and made that a big part of his platform.

Erin Mendenhall vs Luz Escamilla for SLC Mayor is the only race getting a lot of attention here. Whoever wins will be the 3rd female Mayor of SLC.
If Escamilla wins, she'll be the first person of color as well as the first one to live on the West side.

This was a typo, and I meant that three general assembly seats had been flipped. The senate was already called (per my previous post).

Anyway, the GA has now also been called. Democrats control all state government in Virginia. The legislature has been GOP-held since before I could vote.

We have two years of this, before the Gov is up in 2021. We could realistically be the final state to ratify the ERA and f*cking stick it to the Ghost of Phyllis Schlafly, and I SO hope that happens.

So the story of the night appears to be the suburbs, and specifically, suburbs breaking away from Trump and Trumpy candidates. After yesterday, there are now zero GOP state reps in NoVA (aka D.C. suburbs). The KY suburbs absolutely sent a message to Bevin that they weren't here for his Trumpist governing/rhetoric. Big democratic gains in places like suburban Philly. Democrats even control the city of Columbus, Indiana, which is maybe not considered a suburb (not sure, since I don't live there), but is sort of nestled between Indianapolis; Cincinnati, OH; and Louisville, KY.
(It's also Mike Pence's hometown. It's also been run by Republicans for like 40 years.)

Anyway, looks like the idea that impeachment would somehow hurt Democrats was BS.

So Kentucky has a a Democrat for governor? He got more votes but will they do a recount?
1 month ago - Wednesday 11/6/19 - 11:36:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
When I looked it up it said it was too close to call.

Actually almost every result I’ve looked at has been by a narrow margin.

not sure if they'll force a recount but it's looking like it. pretty sure the voters of that state will probably force mitch mcconnell out next. recently i've seen a lot of elections that have gone down to the wire, no huge blowouts or anything.
1 month ago - Wednesday 11/6/19 - 1:50:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
There is no "they" who can "force" a recount. Bevin can request one, after a recanvass is completed. He has to petition a judge for that, and he would also have to pay for it.

Yeah, he was desperate after losing in Kentucky.

I wonder how many points he'll claim the Trumpkin was down by *before* he visited vs. *after*. I believe the completely made-up number in Kentucky was 15 points.
