"We believe Christopher Columbus represents the values of discovery and risk that are at the heart of the American dream” - chief operating officer of the National Italian American Foundation, John M. Viola

Too bad he also represents the values of colonialism and genocide.

I have very mixed feelings about Columbus Day, mostly because it ends up being on my birthday a lot. So i have lot of little kid feelings of, i get my birthday off! Oh. Im home all by myself on my birthday.

Really though, it probably should be replaced, but i question whether it's really that important. No one actually 'celebrates' Columbus day.

We never got it off

I guess it's the same principle as statues of Confederate leaders. Should we be honouring him with a holiday? Probably not.

No one actually celebrates it... but banks are closed and the mail doesn't run. So it's observed. Which it probably shouldn't be.

Without colonialism, the US probably wouldn't exist...

You can disagree all you want, but I thought that the US started out as British colonies...

Italians celebrate Columbus Day

Columbus gets a bad rap these days. There’s so much misinformation about him going around that doesn’t match what actually happened. It’s not like he landed and said “Let’s kill everybody we find here”.

...you do know we have Columbus's own writings, as well as those of some of his contemporaries, that show he basically did exactly that, right? He landed in the Caribbean and immediately set about subjugating, enslaving, torturing, and murdering the people who already lived there. You can read about it in any number of books.

Wait what? My entire family is 100% Italian (minus me and my sister), and no one's ever given a toss about it. I grew up in a super italian area as well. Nothing. Odd.

I read his actual log book. At least on his initial voyage he didn’t kill anybody. At least until later when some of the indigenous people attempted to kill him and his crew.

One of Columbus' first observations of the Arawak men and women who greeted him peacefully in the Caribbean was that "[t]hey would make fine servants....With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want."

I’m Italian too. My celebration is limited to me quietly sitting at my desk and thinking “hooray Columbus”

"when some of the indigenous people attempted to kill him and his crew"

That's a really funny way of saying "when the native people rose up and tried to resist the wholesale enslavement and torture of their entire population."

Though, my understanding is that in the New York area there is a big celebration and they get the day off.

Only that didn’t happen.

They landed on a different island and the people there decided to attack them. We don’t know exactly why because we didn’t speak their language and they kept no records. But it can be assumed they felt threatened in the same way we might be threatened by aliens from another planet landing in our country.
