Ross Perot, the billionaire tycoon who mounted two unsuccessful third-party presidential campaigns in the 1990s, died Tuesday, family spokesman James Fuller confirmed to CNN. He was 89.

Perot died after a five-month battle with leukemia, Fuller said. A billionaire by his mid-50s after he sold a controlling interest in the data processing business he founded, Electronic Data Systems Corporation, to General Motors for $2.5 billion, Perot mounted one of the most successful third-party presidential candidacies in US history in 1992. He garnered nearly 19% of the vote and finished third behind Bill Clinton and incumbent President George H.W. Bush.

I think he was the most successful third party candidate in modern times. He was a centrist and took votes away from both sides. His biggest mistake was dropping out of the race early. He got back in but it was too late to make a difference.

Oh, no, I forgot, his biggest mistake was his choice for vp. “Who am I? Why am I here?”

Kind of depends on how you define both "successful" and "modern times," I think. Perot got a decent number of votes, but won zero states/electoral votes.

George Wallace won five states when he ran on the Segregationist ticket in 1968 (I still consider this "modern," personally).

Oh, I didn’t know Wallace was that popular. Let me guess, the five states were all in the South?

Yes, obviously- he won the five states where the fight over desegregation was the hottest.

Wallace never even expected or strategized to win the election. His entire strategy was to win enough states to upset the Electoral College (make it so neither Nixon or Humphries would win enough votes), so that the election would be decided in the House, where he thought he could play kingmaker.

That's not to say Wallace didn't have support elsewhere, it just wasn't enough to win any other states. There are racist white people in every part of the country. But in the south, you had one major thing: Electoral College power that disproportionately outweighed the number of actual voters. Because in the 1960s, they were still doing things like physically threatening and killing black people who tried to vote (or register black people to vote).

It’s odd that these racist ideas still permeate that part of the country. I guess it’s just ingrained in the subculture there. Though, I suspect most people there are good natured and not racist.

It is a myth that racism is a "southern thing."

I had a conversation with a sweet old lady using a walking frame today.... that is until she said "It's all those immigrants"

Yes, I'm from the South and know many people who currently live there that are not racist.

I dated and found a pocket of racists in NY. And a rumored underground militia of them.

i'm sure racists exist everywhere, but they seem to be more vocal and open about it in the south.

IMO there's a lot of racial tension in the South, some warranted and some not, which underlies most interactions.

Individuals may not be racist but experience has taught them not to expect the same from others.

Plenty of racists out west here too. Mormons make pretty steadfast racists.

But respect to Mr Perot for attempting to change the status quo of American politics. He did finish 2nd in 2 states.

*moment of silence*

"In a statement, Foley said that she “discouraged the vilification of these teens. Instead, we need to seriously address why teens in our community might” behave this way."

i mean the explanation is simple, idiot teenagers behaving like idiot teenagers. costa mesa and newport beach are mostly white areas. they probably have many people like the aflluenza kid there. so i doubt they even are aware of the horrors of nazism or the holocaust.

not excusing their actions, but the best remedy for what you posted is a history lesson. i'm thankful i had a great history teacher when i was their age.

lol seriously? Your actual, real opinion is that high school students basically don't understand what the Holocaust is?

The lengths some people will go to defend racism...

I have a hard time buying that.

Is your argument that they were too rich and white to receive a good education?
8 days ago - Tuesday 7/9/19 - 4:17:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
I know a whole lot of people who did a whole lot of "idiot teenager" sh*t. Can't recall anyone just pretending to be Nazis for funsies.

i said they were idiot teenagers and i don't excuse their actions at all. they did something stupid, and hopefully they faced consequences for it. i wouldn't let that sort of ignorant behavior fly if i were their teacher or parent.

And you also said you "doubt they are even aware of the horrors of [nazism or] the Holocaust." Hence my incredulity that anyone could possibly believe that *high school students* basically don't understand the gravity of an event that's taught to everyone, everywhere, with great emphasis on how horrific it was.

That's simply unrealistic.

I mean this is not like 10th graders not knowing what the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was. It's the f*cking Holocaust. The most famous example of genocide in modern history. By the time I even got TO high school, we'd learned about it in history class in multiple grades, and read at least three books I can think of off the top of my head *in English class* that were set during it, and chosen partially as a teaching tool to show how horrible it was.

It's quite frankly dumb as hell to assume those students "are not even aware of the horrors of Nazism of the Holocaust." If this story had happened in Mississippi, you'd be talking about how typical and expected it was of the "racist South."

i mean in an area where people openly fly confederate flags, wouldn't it be seen as normal or expected? i think we discussed this a while back when you mentioned that people were openly burning crosses not even an hour from where you lived.

i think it's important that we better educate our children, and i think there was a lapse of that in that situation. if anything i would like to reach out to those kids and educate them myself, since people have clearly failed to do so.

So you're just going to double down on "they fly Confederate flags in the south" and write off "they were giving a Nazi salute and yelling "Sieg Heil!" in front of a swastika they made in California" as a lack of knowledge about the Holocaust?

Delusional. But I thank you for openly stating your double standard, so the rest of us don't have to guess.
