Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) created a new political firestorm Tuesday, stating that detention centers housing immigrants are "exactly" like concentration camps and then doubling down in the face of GOP criticism.

"The U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are," Ocasio-Cortez said during an Instagram Live appearance on Monday night.

"If that doesn't bother you ... I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that 'never again' means something."

I wasn't aware people were being starved, worked to death or gassed.

She is belittling what happened during the holocaust

Huh? How many illegals have we killed? Has it reached 6 million?

Concentration camps != death camps. And concentration camps didn't start with Germany in WWII, and they didn't end there, either.

Get a dictionary. And some historical context.

Also, if your quibble is with what we're calling them, as opposed to the horrible conditions and deplorable treatment being done in all of our names, I have to say, I think you've already lost the moral high ground.

Favorite headline on the matter so far: "We're at the 'Concentration Camp Semantics' Stage of 2019 Now"

I think you’re the one that missed the historical context. The phrase “Never again” refers specifically to the Nazi concentration camps.

Yeah, looks like all that dehumanizing rhetoric is really doing its job.

"If you aren't doing literally exactly all the same things the Nazis did, they aren't really concentration camps" is a hell of a hill to die on, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the GOP anymore.

Yeah, this.
IDGAF what you call them but the current administration seems to be okay with depriving people of dignity and basic human rights based on race and ethnicity.

Backlash to this is just another example of Americans sanitizing our own actions in situations like this.
We've ended up calling what we did to over 100,000 Japanese-Americans "internment camps," because calling them "concentration camps" (which they without question were) makes us sound too much like the bad guys.

If you can't recognize and reckon with the ways your country has failed and is continuing to fail, you shouldn't call yourself a patriot. You're just an uncritical nationalist.

The illegals could always, ya know, turn around and go back to where they came from.

Because calling them concentration camps would give the impression we were mass murdering the Japanese.

No, it wouldn't.

Again, concentration camps are NOT always death camps. Even the Nazi ones didn't start out that way.

If you’re concentrating people in a camp how is that not a concentration camp?

Um so what are th people that don’t agree with the meaning of words calling the places where people are being held right now?

Alternate headline could read "Liz Cheney, Daughter of War Criminal Dick Cheney, Thinks She Won Twitter"

I’ll never get over how the people that say the most evil gross things about other human beings tend to claim that they’re religious.

Yeah, I don't usually pay attention to Twitter feuds between politicians/celebrities, but I have to say, seeing her just get bodied by a bunch of historians and descendants of Holocaust survivors was extremely satisfying.

The British interned South African women and children in concentration camps. No one was gassed.
The first concentration camp in Germany was for political dissidents. No one was gassed.

There were 42,500 Concentration camps and Ghettos in Nazi occupied Europe.

There were 6 main extermination camps with a handful of work camps having additional extermination capability.

If you can make multiple posts claiming these aren’t concentration camps, you can use Google to learn what a concentration camp actually is.

These “detention centers” are concentration camps. If you’re arguing semantics to whitewash putting people in concentration camps, you’re a tremendous moron or a monster.

This.

Also, during WWI, all Canadian immigrants of Ukrainian origin were put in camps that were similar to concentration camp.
