Canada’s sick and tired of the U.S. winning. Or at least its sports broadcasters are.

Fresh off the back of the USWNT’s lopsided 13-0 win over Thailand to open its World Cup campaign, a panel on Canadian sports network TSN took some extra time to criticize the U.S. team's exuberant performance.

“It was the way in which they did it, which is now causing headlines… if you are going to blow away a team, do it with humility, and they did not,” host Kate Beirness said.

“I understand there’s a goal differential race in this tournament, and I understand they are nervous about drawing Sweden later in the tournament, but this was disgraceful from the United States,” former Canadian player Clare Rustad chimed in.

It's the World Cup, not 5-year-olds playing tee ball. What are they supposed to do, not score any more goals when they can? Not celebrate the ones they do score? This is just useless policing of a women's team that was rightly happy about playing an extremely dominant game on the world stage.

I mean yeah. I didn't even bother commenting on the idiocy of the article text itself.

It's crass. It's the USA. Nothing surprising here.

Mmm, I am noticing some arrogance on this woman’s team. They don’t acknowledge the criticism. At least don’t celebrate with such enthusiasm after the 10th goal. You friggin won already.

After 10 goals they could’ve let up a little and just play keep away.

And when's the last time anyone called for a men's team to "let up and play keep away" when they'd already run up the score on their opponent?

You're asking a team in the biggest competition there is for their sport to stop playing their best.

None of the criticism was about letting up. its within every teams right to play as competitive as possible to the final whistle.

When looking at the forced celebrations it didnt exactly seem nice, especially when considering the power and resource imbalances between the teams.

Hope Solo wrote a decent article in the guardian on it and rightly highlighted one of the americans going straight up to the thai keeper at the end of the game as the type of image which would have been better for the game than the media sh@tstorm currently floating around.

I don't even really follow soccer and even I've seen that clip/image of the American player comforting the Thai keeper. So it certainly seems that image is getting lots of attention as well.

This is World Cup- - goal differential can matter. They absolutely should not hold up.

13 to 0 in soccer is more humiliating and more crushing

Only in a tie. I doubt it will come into play here.

One never knows. Sweden and the US are currently tied at 3 points. Sweden has to play Thailand too, right?

Their next matches are Chile and Sweden. So yeah, I guess it goal differential could matter.

You’re right

You don’t respect your opponent by letting up.

In rugby for example, the All Blacks regularly crush lesser opposition in the World Cup, sometimes by up to 100 points. No one thinks they’re disrespect for doing so, because they do it with humility for their own skill, and their opposition, and for sportsmanship.

In my view to “let up” would be more humiliating.

Ok, you make a good point there.

I think not playing their best would have been even more disrespectful. That’s just toying with the other team.

I agree.

I’d much rather be crushed by an opponent than have that opponent let up. Letting up on someone, to me, is essentially saying, “you’re so bad, we don’t even need to try.”

Similarly, my soccer/football coach expected us to try our hardest to the very end even if we were being crushed.

I think there's plenty of wiggle room in the discussion when speaking of high school level play.

In the unanimously chosen highest level of competition in the world for a sport? No.

I like the Rugby example even more because of the bonus point for scoring at least four tries, in addition to the point earned for staying within 7 on the score sheet. Actually incentivises teams to smash their opponents when possible.

Letting up on another team raises another issue.

Match fixing. If the USA decided that they would let up at 10-0 someone could make a lot of money on spread betting if they knew that was going to happen.
