(ALBANY, N.Y.) — New York state would legalize the buying and selling of sex under a proposal introduced in the state Legislature Monday that would lift criminal penalties for sex work.

The bill isn’t expected to get a vote before the Democrat-led Senate and Assembly plan to adjourn for the year next week. But supporters still hailed the announcement of the bill as a critical step toward repealing criminal penalties for sex workers and their customers.

Speaking at a press conference in Manhattan Monday, former and current sex workers talked about being forced into the industry as minors. They said many sex workers rely on their jobs to make ends meet.

Several places have made this move, only to put the crime on the shoulders of the customer. (prostitution)

That isn't what decrim is. Making the buyer the one who gets charged is commonly referred to as the "Nordic Model" (because of its adoption in some Scandinavian countries). Actual decriminalization (what NY is considering) means neither party would be charged. That's the model preferred by the vast majority of sexworkers, and has been the law in New Zealand for several years, with a good amount of success. A lot of the "negatives" some people predicted would come about as a result (increased sex trade, increased human trafficking) just…haven't.

When they say "introduce bill". Do they mean Clinton?

Thanks for the clarification.

while i have no issue with sex work in general, i'm just wondering how quickly sex work will fall under the ever-tightening grip of government control.

To be fair, lots of similar things have been said about being married to Trump without you getting outraged over it...

That is ALSO not what decrim is. What you're referring to would be legalization.

It actually helps if people read what those in the industry have to say about the various options.

Because Trump cheated on each of his wives...

What specifically has Clinton done that is objectively destructive to her marriage? Rather than just being subjectively unattractive (both physically and personality-wise)

So?

Why does the criteria have to be 'objectively destructive to marriage' in order to judge someone as 'a person most would dread to marry'? Seems like you are just trying to justify a double standard.

So what are the rules, Bird? Doesn't it really just come down to the fact that you think Clinton is OK to marry and you cannot accept that others don't feel the same?

Which source should a journalist go with– Jacob Wohl or Mark Felt?

Which person’s company should an investor invest in– Elizabeth Holmes or Elon Musk?

Which person should Camp Tikihama hire as a camp counselor– Jeffery Epstein or Joan Rivers?

Whose medical advice should I follow– Andrew Wakefield or Ben Carson?

Which person should a non-profit organization hire to head the human rights division of their lobbying branch– Rodrigo Duerte or Ayaan Hirsi Ali?

It’s so hard because all these people are the same! Actions mean nothing! And nothing matters anymore!

This i have trouble with.

It is certainly the preffered method by those who are privileged to be able to demand things and have a voice. to what extent those are a majority of sex workers is debatable.

I dont have experience with the American or NZ system/sex work culture but in the NL there are many problems with sex work and those who have access to a voice vs industrial efforts to whitewash the industry.

It is a shame the third wave is so in love with capitalism that it has chucked out much of what made the second wave so daring and revolutionary.

3mehs, it seems you think there's a "silent majority" of sex workers who are not in favor of decrim. I would like to see what evidence you have for that (genuinely), because I'm not taking out my ass or ascribing beliefs to people when I don't know what they think; I'm speaking about the vast majority of interviews, writings, etc. I've seen by people (largely women) in the actual industry.
