The FBI on Saturday arrested a man described as a commander of an armed group that has been detaining migrants in New Mexico, the state attorney general’s office said.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, of Flora Vista, New Mexico, was arrested for allegedly being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas and the FBI said.

The arrest comes after New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, demanded that members of a militia group, some of whom are armed, stop detaining migrants at the New Mexico-Mexico border.

Been reading a bunch on twitter about this. The number of people on the right who are defending this guy tells me that the whole "law abiding gun owners" thing is a BS line. When it's pointed out that he was breaking the law by possessing a firearm they are all too willing to ignore that.

Further, I have to again point out as a prior service member, the idea of civilians ( and former service members among them ) roaming with firearms is a recipe for someone to get killed by a trigger happy moron.

Also super distressing is that the group is all in on citing that they are working directly with CBP. Which is insanity. Should trigger an investigation in itself. They cite 100's of instances of direct work with CBP on their Facebook.

Also, the biggest thing I keep seeing is that these chuckleheads are just executing a citizen's arrest. My understanding is that the majority of states require a reasonable suspicion that the person is in commission of a felony. Which crossing is not. This is essentially illegal detention, which those involved should be charged with before they kill someone.

This is freaking insanity. I can’t believe people think it’s oK to wonder around the country menacing others with guns and detaining them.

probably part of the "government gonna take our guns" group of gun owners, who i detest. if the government really wanted your guns they'd have done it a long time ago.

Isn't the NRA responsible for stirring up a lot of that?

No, it isn't. Show some proof or stop talking out of your ass.

Ha. Sure they aren't. They only run ads, and send out their stooges on any network that will take them, making accusations that any proposed gun control legislation is the first step on the slippery slope of take all yer guns.

I mis read him as saying the NRA encourages stopping people at the border.

Of course they try to stop all gun legislation. That's their job.

They definitely did not always see that as their job. The ultra-conservatives took over the organization in the '70s, and that's when the real insanity started. Before that, they were in favor of at least some common-sense gun legislation.
(Of course at least some of that pro-restriction attitude was due to a rise in the number of black Americans owning and carrying guns...but I'm not sure the NRA specifically was any more racist about that particular issue than the country as a whole)

That's good I thought you had lost your mind and were maybe going to regress into crapping your pants.
