A female cyclist who surged ahead of the pack in a prestigious race in Belgium was forced to stop after she caught up with her male counterparts Saturday. Competition officials had to temporarily halt the women's portion of the Omloop het Nieuwsblad race, which started 10 minutes after the men's competition on the same course.

The speedy former Swiss road race champion Nicole Hanselmann excelled to start the race, pulling ahead of the other women at around the 4-mile mark. She pedaled on alone for a while — until she began spotting the men.

As she approached the male riders, the race's official Twitter account called for the "neutralisation" of the women's race due to a "very slow men's race." "Riders will restart with the same timings," it added.

Dear race organizers,
Whatever amount of time you think is enough between waves/heats...double it. Always.

Yeah, 10 minutes is nothing on a bike, really. I don't see why they thought that was a reasonable amount of time between the groups. Really disrespectful to the women.

She's pretty rightly pissed off about this, because even though she got a 2-minute head start when the women's race restarted, it killed her momentum.

if the men are going to go so slow they should practice a bit of chivalry and let the women go first

I don’t think they all get together and decide they’re going to go slow

Not sure why they needed to stop the race. Why couldn’t they just let her keep going?

If they let her keep going, everyone would have to keep going. If the men continued to ride a slow page, it would end up with being too many riders crowded into too little a space, likely impeding the women riders.

'"The organization had to intervene because the leader of the women's race was getting too close to the convoy of the men's race. At that point the elite women's race was neutralized for about five minutes time. As soon as the safety was restored the women were able to continue, with respect for the previous time differences obtained during the race," it said.

Moving forward, organizers will consider starting the women's race a "few minutes" later than this year's, according to the statement.'

How much is a few?

Before this turns into that thread, it should be noted that breakaways and lax pace scenarios in teams are super common in cycling. Road racing is not a sport where every individual is just going for a personal fastest time possible. People who break away early in races rarely hold up. Drafting is king, yadda yadda. I had that drilled into my confused head as a kid (son of former iron man/cycling semi-pro nut). If you ever see standings during a race itself, it can be alarming how far back the eventual stage winner often is.

Either way, same result. 10 minutes is too short, needs to be extended.

It would give her an unfair advantage over the women cycling behind her. Cyclists traveling behind or in large groups, called pelotons, don’t have to expend as much energy by drafting.

One of the strategies in cycling races is to ride in a peloton through most of the race to save energy and then breakaway towards the end.

How is that advantage unfair, though? It's not like anything but their own riding speed was preventing other women from riding in the men's group.

This could all be solved by people giving up on cycling.

I can understand that, but was there really not enough space? The longer a race continues, the more spread out the racers become.

Yup! They presumably all started at the same place and at the same time.
