Tommy Robinson, the far-right founder of the English Defence League, has been permanently banned from Facebook and Instagram for repeatedly breaking policies on hate speech, Facebook said.

The company said Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, broke rules that ban public calls for violence against people based on protected characteristics; rules that ban supporting or appearing with organised hate groups; and policies that prevent people from using the site to bully others.

The decision to ban Robinson from the social media sites could threaten his ability to reach large audiences. He is already banned from Twitter and the decision to cut him off from Instagram and Facebook will leave him reliant on YouTube as the only major online platform to provide him with a presence.

"The public interest demands an end to laissez-faire regulation, so we can create a place where reasonable debate can take place without trolls, extremists and racist thugs seeking to damage and undermine society. That requires an independent social media regulator with teeth.”

banning alex jones from social media only increased his audience. i think if these sites continue to ban people they'll only validate the claims from their supporters that they're being censored.

That is demonstrably untrue.

Yeah, apparently it increased his audience by
-50%.

Exactly. I really don't get the argument that not letting someone use your platform to say whatever they want is somehow censorship.

(did something happen with 'Tric while I was gone?)

How can it not be censorship?

Same old story, really, except this time he earned himself a permanent ban.

the infowars app was top trending on the google play store for a while if i recall correctly. i don’t agree with alex jones but you’ll have people seeking him out. best not to give him media coverage, but at the same time you have people harassing sandy hook victims and their families because of what he said. it’s a tightrope nobody wants to walk.

How is it censorship?
Social media is not the government.
You don't support the right of a business to establish a code of conduct and remove those (temporarily or permanently) who refuse to comply?

Especially when allowing hate groups to use the business as a platform for their message exposes the business to lawsuits?

His audience did not increase (read the link). The ones he kept just had to resort to other means (beyond twitter, youtube, periscope, etc.) in order to continue following him.

I misremembered a cultural reference, but it's like you learned what the Streisand Effect was and just assume it applies to every situation across the board. Jones has lost about half his audience because deplatforming f*cking works.

CD is jumping into a semantic lecture.

Censorship by private business is still censorship. It's just not government enacted censorship.

Just as discrimination against people wearing trainers who want to enter a nightclub is still discrimination.

Can we not just cut off this dumb argument at the knees?

People are allowed to say what they want (well, I'm not sure about this Tommy Robinson guy, since the UK actually has anti-hate speech laws). But that doesn't mean anyone else has to provide a platform for that speech.

There, done.

is he really being deplatformed if the media is reporting on something crazy he's said? that's why i said it's a tightrope. it's not like MSNBC or CNN or fox news will be deplatformed any time soon.
19 days ago - Thursday 2/28/19 - 5:03:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, he is being deplatformed. That's what it's called when a ***platform*** (such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.) removes and bans your content.

Alex Jones didn't make his living and build his following because major media outlets gave him coverage. He managed that through lots of self-promotion on social media (and the fact that there are apparently a lot of idiots in the world).

Occasional major media reporting on newsworthy events that he's central to (such as the Sandy Hook parents' lawsuit) might possibly cause a small, temporary spike in visitors to his site, but at this point, none of those stories have caused a sustained increase in his popularity.

Again: this is not a thing that's happening, no matter how much you insist that it is.

It is censorship. Not all censorship is bad.

So businesses should be allowed to run they own show but when they do in a way you dont like its against free speech

Theres a sort of direct comparison to the calls for firing nfl players for taking a knee here too but i dont feel like articulating it

Basically the ducking and diving over what is and isnt Good Values or whatever is so so tiring and never ending. Its like them goalposts that never stop moving only its assholes

The big difference being that the NFL players aren't promoting hate and violence against protected categories of people.
