“I came in from a trip I’d been on and I spotted—it looked odd—it was a woman of a different ethnicity than the child, this little toddler she had, and something didn’t click with me,” McCain said in the radio interview. “I went over to the police and told them what I saw, and they went over and questioned her, and, by God, she was trafficking that kid.”
McCain went on to say that she discovered the woman was waiting for the man who bought the child to arrive from his flight.

Phoenix police said Wednesday that while officers did respond to the Jan. 30 call, at McCain’s request, they were able to determine “there was no evidence of criminal conduct or child endangerment.”

This might seem like a small story at first glance. But in reality, it's what happens when white women (and it's really almost always white women) convince themselves that human trafficking (particularly child sex trafficking) is lurking around every corner. I can't count the number of eye-rollingly stupid viral facebook posts I've seen about this crap. "Some guy was following me and my teenage daughters around Wal-Mart the other day! We just barely avoided being kidnapped and trafficked!"

She basically racially profiled this poor mother and child who were doing absolutely nothing wrong, then went on a radio show and told HUGE lies about it to make herself look like some kind of hero. Then when she was called out on it, she gave some mealy-mouthed non-apology about "if you see something, say something."

It's stupid to think that just because someone appears to be a different race than their child, they must have criminal intent.

At least she didn't do it on live social media. I'm amazed Lindsay Lohan didn't make more news with that debacle.

Yeah but is this really better? She f*cked up and THEN went on the radio and made up a whole white savior narrative about it.

Some people were surprised she did this, because the McCains have an adopted daughter who's from Bangladesh.
The article doesn't mention the races of the mother and child she called the cops on. But that kind of thing happens to women of color...more than you'd think. Maybe not calling the cops, but people assuming a darker-skinned mother with a light-skinned child is a nanny or babysitter.

It happened with my husband and his dad a lot growing up because my husband is practically white. People would just assume they weren't father and son because of their skin color.

Yep. Happens to a friend of mine a lot, too. She's biracial, her kid's father is white. Besides being very light-skinned, her son also resembles his father features-wise a lot more. It was worse when he was an infant. People just assumed she was the nanny.

Meanwhile I have several (white) friends who have adopted and/or fostered kids of different races, and nobody ever does that to them. It's an interesting (and sad) real-world example of a situation where whiteness isn't questioned, and un-whiteness is suspect.

I actually have a coworker who has joked about this because he is hispanic and all 4 of his children are blonde haired and blue eyed ( his wife is blond and white ). He says he is waiting for the day he is at the park trying to get a bunch of screaming kids into a van and the cops show up.
