Pope Francis has admitted that clerics have sexually abused nuns, and in one case they were kept as sex slaves.

He said in that case his predecessor, Pope Benedict, was forced to shut down an entire congregation of nuns who were being abused by priests.

It is thought to be the first time that Pope Francis has acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy.

He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was "still going on".

Last November, the Catholic Church's global organisation for nuns denounced the "culture of silence and secrecy" that prevented them from speaking out.

The Pope's comments come amid long-running allegations of sexual abuse of children and young men by priests at the Church.

With the way the RCC handles sexual abuse, it's probably not only a bunch of priests who actually abused women, but also a bunch more priests/bishops/cardinals who covered up for them and enabled them to continue doing it. I'm betting the chances of "all the people responsible" getting any jail time at all are pretty close to zero. They'll close ranks just like they do with child sexual abuse.

So much for the vow of celibacy

Where I grew up, there was a huge monastery and a small nun congregation on the opposite corner. (Like, just diagonally facing (?) the monastery.)

Both orders came in decline, and the buildings were sold. They found a roughly made tunnel joining the two buildings.

Can't they just make and keep a vow to not victimize children and nuns?
Literally no one cares if they're celibate or not but the abuse and sexual assault need to go away or the entire church should be done away with.

I think they are sliding into oblivion.

in one of the gun FB groups i'm in, they said they would "hunt down pedophiles" when child sexual abuse by priests was brought up. the families of the victims have every right to feel that way. but at least the justice system will give them their day in court, not sure if the families of the victims will be as forgiving. i know if it was my kids, i would unleash hell on them.

I don't think you understood what I was saying there…I don't think the vast majority of people involved in this will even go to trial, much less jail.

How many priests/other clergy are known to have abused kids and/or actively covered up for those who did? How many of them ever saw the inside of a courtroom?

An updated article says this abuse of women went at least up to the Bishop level. You think the RCC is going to let anyone put bishops in jail?

I think their choices are:
1) allow justice to be served and to hell with the clergy who committed these crimes
Or
2) watch the entire church go bankrupt as victims rightfully file claims and collect damages.

I think most people are actually okay with both 1 and 2 happening at this point.

I think I heard about that. (Or it could’ve been another monastery)
