As of Saturday, there are 32 confirmed cases of measles in Washington - - an outbreak that has already prompted Gov. Jay Inslee to declare a state of emergency.

"Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be fatal in small children," Inslee said in his proclamation Friday, adding that these cases create "an extreme public health risk that may quickly spread to other counties."

As of Saturday, there were 31 cases of the measles in Clark County, which sits on the state's southern border, just across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. Of the 31 cases, 21 are children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old.

There are people in my area that got a religious exemption to not vaccinate their child. Ok fine, but then you cannot let your child in the schools.

The only consolation with this is that a lot of people who are devoutly religious enough to be anti-vax because of it are also probably the type to homeschool or send their kids to a religious private school.

But the problem is, the kids still go out in public. A lot of childhood diseases are SUPER contagious, so every time the parents take those kids to the grocery store, the park, whatever, they're putting others at risk.

Should the government force vaccines? I always thought it like a herd thing where so many got vaccinated that the few would not cause harm but with more and more not getting their child vaccinated, its probably not working.

Herd immunity still requires a very high % of people to be vaccinated in order to be effective. It functions on the principle that unvaccinated/susceptible people will have an extremely low chance of encountering someone who can transmit the disease to them. In many areas, you can pretty reliably depend on this. But there are hotspots where, if one kid gets whooping cough or something, a LOT of people are put at risk (this happened here, to me. There was an outbreak in a nearby school, and I can't get the TDaP vax for medical reasons).

I do think parents should have to provide a legitimate medical reason for not vaccinating children. Religion shouldn't be permitted to cause a public health crisis.

given that vaccination has been proven to be safe and effective, this is something i'd actually be in support of. causing a public health crisis in the name of religion and/or essential oils is immoral.

my wife and i work at schools, you're not attending class if you're not vaccinated. heck, you shouldn't be within a certain distance of the school if you're not vaccinated, if it were up to me.

I’m telling you guys, I frequently visit parenting forums and the number of anti vaxxers have shot way up.

Also the thing about going to school without being vaccinated is not true. You can get out of the vaccination requirements by claiming it’s against your religion. This is the same for nurses and people that work in hospitals. (Isn’t that frightening?)

Also they come for you and tell you that you’re poisoning and hurting your children by injecting them with poison.

Imagine being postpartum and doing everything in your power to keep a newborn alive. You freak out when they are sleeping that they’re going to stop breathing. EVERYTHING is on high alert and you’re sleep deprived, your body just went through extreme trauma, but you can’t even sleep more than 2 hours at a time to heal. Then you have people telling you how you’re going to kill your baby at their 2 month visit by letting them give the shots.

It’s really twisted what they’re doing to new parents.

I know the #s have increased a lot. But I think Inquizitor is actually right about public schools in CA. They passed a law a few years ago that said non-medical exemptions wouldn't be accepted anymore.

Yeah, this is insane. They prey on fears (which are totally normal) to try and push their agenda.

My sister is a SPED teacher. She teaches kids who are on the Autism spectrum every day. It was not even remotely a difficult choice for her to vaccinate on schedule...even if the bogus link were real, Autism isn't deadly. Measles, whooping cough, etc. can be.

I wasn’t aware that CA had that law. Quick google search shows that only 3 states have it. Not okay.

Clueless idiots are always dragging on CA, but they do a lot right and that's my two cents about it.

Are they going to build a wall around Measles and the move it to the Mexican border afterwards?

I don't trust these guys.

I agree with bored. Clearly the only solution is to build a wall and make Oregon pay for it.

When I was a kid there were over 35 cases of measles in my school.

3 of them were in my family. We just stayed home and tried to infect my pre-school aged sister.

This is close to us, they’ve issued a warning about going down to these areas here as well as it possibly being brought up.

Anti-vaxxers held a rally for the right to continue allowing their children to contract dangerous childhood diseases and spread them to more unfortunate people

With all those unvaccinated people in the same place, during an epidemic, I wonder how many more measles cases that will cause.

i know it's probably never going to happen (or maybe it has and i haven't seen anything happen yet), but anti-vaxxers should be arrested and charged with child endangerment and endangering the public.

A hundred years ago, there were riots when govt made vaccination mandatory.

It’s an old persistent fear.

Rockland County, NY has banned unvaccinated children from public spaces due to a measles outbreak.

In our province, namely Ontario, Canada, if your vaccinations aren't up to date, you are officially expelled from school. You MUST provide proof from your doctor.

Well done, Ontario. Well done.

We're not allowed to have the government set up common sense poo like that, Sprat.

They're too busy trying to figure out how to waste billions of dollars to build the drating idiot wall
