...including almost half of self-identified Republicans.

Earlier this month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went on national television and said that the United States should tax incomes above $10 million at a 70 percent rate.
[...]

Over the weekend, pollsters from the Hill–HarrisX asked voters, “Would you favor or oppose a tax proposal that would apply a 70% rate to the 10 millionth dollar and beyond for individuals making $10 million a year or more in reportable income?” — and 59 percent said yes.

The idea was “popular in all regions of the country.” Southerners backed it by a 57-to-43 percent margin, while 56 percent of voters in rural zip codes agreed that the socialist congresswoman was onto something. Even 45 percent of self-identified Republicans approved.

What is the taxation rate like for business in the US?
27 days ago - Monday 1/21/19 - 7:18:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
It was 35% until Republicans lowered it to 21% in their tax cut bill. Obviously that's a base rate, and doesn't include any of the many, many ways corporations can lower their effective rate.

To be clear though, this proposal isn't about corporate earnings. It's about individuals.

It used to be 90% back when america was great.

Even as late as 1980, the top marginal rate was over 70%, AND the top bracket didn't start anywhere near $10M. More like $260,000. Then Reagan came along and convinced a bunch of people that trickle-down economics wasn't total garbage, and even though it demonstrably IS, we've never heard the end of it since.

The most infuriating thing has been watching the elected ones (and talking heads) pretend they don't understand what a marginal tax rate is, or how it works. That idiot Scott Walker gave a particularly dumb example that actually got a (very mocking) response from Ocasio-Cortez.

I know. I just wanted to compare the numbers.

Why? You have a strong desire to see the rich be punished for being wealthy?

The poor get punished for being poor... it’s only fair.

Nobody's seeking to tax them more, and taking more taxes from the rich isn't going to cause poor people to not be poor anymore.

If 90% was such a great thing, why did they get rid of it?

Taxes are not a punishment. Nor are taxes theft.

Taxes are the cost everyone pays in exchange for the benefits and protections of living in a society. They go towards things that benefit everyone, but there are many ways that wealthy people especially benefit from the services that our tax dollars go towards.

First, wealthy people are more likely to employ other people and to benefit from an educated workforce. Our taxes go towards educating that workforce.

Wealthy people rely on infrastructure to ship goods they sell. Our roads, railways, and airports benefit them there.

Wealthy people are able to power their factories and offices because of taxpayer funded electrical grids.

US copyright, trademark, and patent laws cover wealthy people’s IP. US courts, the US PTO, treaties we have negotiated with other countries, etc. mean that wealthy people can actually enforce their IP rights and profit from their IP.

Wealthy people are likely to get into costly litigation related to their businesses, and they can rely on taxpayer funded courts to help them enforce business contracts, for example.

Defense spending and trade deals negotiated by our government allow wealthy people to safely conduct business abroad.

The US government has enacted strict legislation regarding mail theft, fraud, etc. and given broad authority to the USPS to enforce those laws which protects businesses/wealthy individuals who conduct business via mail.

Disaster recovery means businesses can recover faster after a disaster and that their employees can return to work sooner.

Socialism for the rich, rugged individualism for the poor.

Not as easy to write about in your college app essay as "I have a dream" , surely that's why it's less quoted.

I do not think anyone can amass a billion dollars without heavy public subsidies and general exploitation.

Wealthy people earn their wealth, grow their wealth, and keep their wealth because everyone’s tax dollars go towards creating a society that makes all of the above possible.

Is there anybody arguing that we shouldn't pay any taxes?

It looks like you listed a lot of things we all pay taxes for, which help the rich as well as the poor.

In a society where the rich have benefitted the most, it's sensible to ask them to contribute the most so others can have a better opportunity.

I really don't get the opposition to this. Is it because you are secretly a multimillionaire?
