Lawmakers are expected to convene Saturday on Capitol Hill, as a plan to fund the government has yet to come to fruition. This comes just a day after members of Congress and President Donald Trump failed to come to an agreement on a deal, resulting in the third government shutdown this year.
On Friday, Vice President Mike Pence, budget director Mick Mulvaney and the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, came to Capitol Hill, where they stayed into the evening after both the House and Senate adjourned for the night.
Funding for roughly a quarter of the federal government expired at midnight, including appropriations for the departments of Homeland Security, Justice, Housing and Urban Development and other parts of the government. This is the first time in 40 years the govt will shut down 3x in one year.

The National Christmas Tree (and all the other decorated trees surrounding it) is dark because of the shutdown. No merry Christmas lights in D.C

I think Indonesia not being able to rely on US Geological Survey before being hit by a tsunami is a bigger story.

Even atheists think Christmas trees are pretty. Well at least one of them.

After having seen the White House Christmas decoration I prefer it to stay in the dark ...

This is the outside tree. It's actually tasteful and nice looking (when it's lit).

Somebody found some donations somewhere to get the lights back on, but I'm unclear as to whether it's already reopened or it won't be reopened until Monday.

This years were much better than last year's, though. This year looks like somebody wanted to film a cinema for adult viewingo in whoville, whereas last year was like.... "Let the Right One In" on ice.

So does the Government shutdown mean that border police are not being paid to prevent people from walking over where Trump wants to build the wall?

Yes. CBP is considered essential, so they have to work during the shutdown, but they aren't being paid during it.

Congress has always approved back pay for any essential government employees who have worked during past shutdowns, but obviously bills don't wait for back pay to come through.

I'm going to build a wall and the border police are going to pay for it!

I thought the Democrats were going to pay for it. I'm confused ...

Its so annoying that House and Senate members receive their $174,000 a year salary and their staff continue to be paid during the shut down. There was a bill introduced last January for withholding member’s salaries, but it of course failed to pass.

What a bunch of bullsh-t. Easy to force a government shutdown when your money will keep coming. How these selfish bastards are allowed to do that is f-cking mind-blowing.

They will still get paid for doing literally nothing (short of pouting and throwing a tantrum), while your military personnel (who Trump loves using for his own political gain) fighting real wars will be delayed on their own pay. I have friends in the U.S. military, and I've heard the sh-t they go through, so this is just a little extra infuriating.

What a sh-t show, 'Murica.

I don't think it's fair or appropriate to punish house and senate staffers during a shutdown, personally. The legislators themselves, yeah, their pay should be on hold. But staffers don't generally make big bucks, and DC is expensive. A lot of them are probably living paycheck to paycheck as it is.

However, in this case it's really mostly just the one guy who's throwing a temper tantrum about his pet project not being funded. Maybe the shutdown should include cutting off the cable TV and internet in the White House residence, that might actually get to him.

"Government shutdowns" have always been bullsh*t. It's nothing but a way to throw a tantrum and annoy people.

They're always stupid, but it's definitely an extra special/impressive kind of stupid when one party controls both houses of Congress and the WH, and they STILL manage to shut down the government (three times in a single year, no less).

Yeah, that's quite a feat.
