Published 1:01 p.m. CT Dec. 17, 2018. DE PERE - A Brown County judge has determined a De Pere ordinance barring discrimination based on gender identity infringes on the religious freedom of local churches.

The ordinance, approved by the De Pere City Council last year, prohibits employers, businesses and landlords from discriminating against people based on gender identity or expression. The protections cover those who identify as transgender and gender non-binary.

On Friday, Judge William Atkinson ruled the policy infringes on the churches' freedom of religion and said they shouldn't be considered public accommodations that would be subject to the ordinance's mandates.

In their original complaint, the churches and radio station pointed to religious doctrine that prohibits same-sex marriage and considers gender dysphoria a "disorder of creation."

I would have a problem with being forced to support (through taxes) a facility that openly discriminates.

I'm over churches getting special treatment on religious grounds, tbh, and that goes for the ability to openly discriminate, tax exemption, etc.

On the tax exemption thing, my personal opinion is that churches should have to show yearly that a designated percentage (same for all) of their income is going to legitimate charitable organizations/endeavors.

Isn't the church itself considered to be a legitimate charitable organization?

sometimes

...and lots of organizations get tax exemptions as non-profit entities even though they are not necessarily charitable organizations.

If they're not doing actual charitable work, they shouldn't be. That's my point.

Look at Scientology, for example.

religious organizations are already somewhat exempt from following certain title ix issues

so I can kinda see this going the same way

but I feel like it should fall more in line with “x position is only available to priests and priests are only men, so no women are considered for it”

whereas if you are hiring a janitor or an accountant, you shouldn’t be able to discriminate based on gender identity

As long as they are a non-profit entity, they should enjoy the same tax exemptions as all other non-profit entities regardless of what charitable work they do or do not do.

If they're spending huge amounts of time and resources covering for child molesters, they shouldn't be, either.

This seems reasonable.

And Rag's argument is that they should not be considered non-profit entities if they don't do charitable work. It would be a change to the current situation. try to keep up.

yeah, tax exempt status should not be helping you pay off victims of your priesthood

and scientology and mormonism and these mega churches that seem to only exist to enrich the preacher should not be tax exempt

they are strictly businesses

I'm a person who grew up in a small church, so I have no vendetta against churches in general, but they should be doing good in the world to help the less fortunate as part of the condition of receiving tax exemptions.

Scientology spends a hell of a lot of money hiring people to stalk and intimidate former members and anyone speaking out against the organization, too.

I disagree that non-profits should be required to do charitable work.

I'm talking about churches, not all non-profits.

Stay on topic.

A trans person could be told they are not welcome in these churches because their God does not accept them. But please continue to pay taxes to support the roads and water, fire and police services that our churches utilize for free. suckers.

I think that the same rules need to apply to all non-profits as far as tax exemptions go.
