The tribe that appears to have killed American John Allen Chau on remote North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal is one of a number of vanishing peoples sealed off from the rest of the world.

The Sentinelese, as they're known, are protected by Indian law to preserve their way of life and protect them from modern illnesses to which they have no immunity.

Laws banning outsiders from going within five nautical miles of the island are also there to protect strangers because the tribe, which has lived on the island for tens of thousands of years, has a history of forcefully repelling outsiders.

But they need to know about Jesus!

I wonder if this guy wasn't fundamentalist suicidal.... Ready to die and meet Jesus sooner sort of thing.

This genius:

Knew there were laws against coming within five nautical miles of the island
Hired some fishermen to take him there illegally anyway
Got shot with some arrows but managed to make it out
*went back anyway* and they killed him
all because he thought the rules shouldn't apply to him and he wanted to "bring them the Gospel"

Not only has this group of people repeatedly (and sometimes forcefully) resisted contact from outsiders (iow it's dangerous for people to go there), they are thought to have basically no immunity to a bunch of diseases, so it's dangerous *for them* for people to go there. With a population of 50-150, this idiot could have potentially wiped out a huge portion of them through his stupidity and religious hubris.

From what I've read it doesn't seem like it. Sounds like he just had a white saviour complex and thought it was his mission to deliver the savages to Jesus or what the f*ck ever.

I laughed out loud when I first heard about this guy. Glad he's dead. Hope it warns other nutjobs away.

I have never understood missionaries anyway because if people don't follow Christianity because they haven't been introduced to it, they won't go to hell, but if you introduce them and they reject it, then they do. So wouldn't it be better not to tell them?

It's just arrogant and self-serving to the extreme. Not to mention manipulative - go to some isolated place and help people get better access to clean water, or build better shelters or whatever, and then start proselytizing to them and trying to convince them their traditional religion is heresy. Gross.
And at its worst, it's actively harmful (looking at you, Catholics in Africa).

Fundamentalist believe Jesus won't come back until every person on earth has heard of Jesus so it is imperative that every heathen is reached.

Who cares if they reject him and go to hell, we get Jesus back!

that’s not really the case
my cousin is a missionary in china and she believes (and I’m pretty sure this holds true for her entire brand of evangelical baptists) everyone is going to hell who doesn’t accept jesus whether they know about him or not

Once you get into it, it's pretty terrifying how many fundie Christian beliefs are really about bringing about the End Times.
That's why they love Israel so much, too. Not because they just love Jewish people so much, but because they think all the Jews need to be returned there in order to kick-start the end of days and Christ's return.

Basically they're a death cult.

Apparently they don’t know about agriculture or even making fire.

oh! and it’s actually not even enough to accept jesus

you have to accept him in their very specific way
otherwise you are going to hell

it’s not enough to be catholic or methodist or episcopalian
you have to specifically be “born again” otherwise you aren’t really christian

Theres this weirdddd theme in the comments sections of news pages that post this article, where right wing conservatives are saying look what happens when you don't respect someone's borders. Or like this is what happens when indigenous groups aren't nice like the Native Americans were.

And it's such an odd understanding of indigenous rights with such misplaced conclusions.

for Catholics, you need to be baptized, no? There was a long debate at the Vatican decades ago about what happens to unbaptized dead children.

And then others saying we (outsiders) are doing them a disservice by not forcing them to assimilate and "join modern society."

At least drop a wheelbarrow and a lighter from an helicopter.

There have been some overtures made over the years, where various governments and groups have tried to give them things. It mostly hasn't gone well, and the gifts haven't been accepted.

It does have a certain irony that a religious fundamentalist would earn himself a Darwin award ...

they make a mean arrow though. I saw a documentary about 20 years ago concerning potential “lost tribes”
In the Amazon rainforest. The was a rumour of a surviving tribe who’s watchword was “Never spare a Christian” it seemed to have served them well.
Can you spare some change please. Yes but I will never spare a Christian.

Believe in end of days if you must but don't actively try to cause it. They do realize that Armageddon (as taught) would involve tens of millions of deaths, right?

these “christians” don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves

they are the most selfish and the most holier than thou

speaking of which where’s dacash?

Yes, they do. They don't think that matters because they think whatever comes after death will be better for them anyway.

(I hadn't thought of dacash but now I am…I mean, isolated people, white savior complex, inability to understand that the rules apply to him, belief that god will protect him from harm, End Times death wish? It all adds up…)
