Federal authorities have arrested a New York man on charges of unlawfully manufacturing an explosive device, after they say he constructed a 200-pound bomb which he intended to detonate on the National Mall in Washington D.C. on Election Day next month.

Paul Rosenfeld, 56, was arrested in Rockland County after authorities got a tip from an unidentified individual in Pennsylvania that Rosenfeld was allegedly communicating with about his plot.

Rosenfeld adheres to an ideology called Sortition, which advocates that government officials should be selected by lottery rather than popular vote, according to the complaint.

The last part is why I posted this, because what the hell?

Honestly.....thats not a terrible idea.

Its the most extreme version of the Peter principal. I'm fairly convinced that we have an absolute massive amount of individuals in elected postions that are in way over their head. Why not make it random and let some of the broke people be in way over their head. They would at least have a different outlook on governance.

Choosing at random would have had about 90% chance of giving us a better result in 2016.

See, it depends. Are we talking random, as in "here's a slate of 10 possibilities for this senate seat, and a random number generator chooses one"? Or are we talking random as in "there are ~6.5 million adults in the state of VA, and a random number generator will make one of them the senator"? Because that's kind of a big difference.

I'm inspire of a random number generator, but you'd have to have... Eh let's say 1500 people because I can't remember the exact number, but it's under that, so that it's actually a representative sample. This way you'd get America as is represented at the time of sampling.

The minimum age for President is 35. Put all Americans 35 or overin a random drawing. Unless we get someone mentally incompetent or an actual Nazi like cd then we get a better result than we actually did in 2016. I figure that's about 10% giving us 90% chance of success.
Yeah, you could do some background check and some vetting and get it down to the 20 most qualified but where's the fun in that?

Not just the president, all positions so that checks and balances exist. So even if SSSteve becomes president there is a Congress that is statistically unlikely to lean as far to the left or right on anything. Also, term limits, one term and that's it. 6 years a term for house, 8 for Senate rotates as evenly as possible.

President is 4 years a term, VP is 8 years. President is only responsible for foreign affairs, etc and the VP is directly responsible for influencing Congress and legislation

I say no to term limits. If the random generator happens to somehow come up with the same person who's already in the office, out of a pool of literally millions, I think that's as close as we can get to saying something was destined. Let 'em keep the job in that case.

(this is a fun little mock Constitutional Convention we're having here, guys. What else do we want while we're at it?!)

Y'know we could have a simple test with questions like:

Fill in the (blank)
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, (blank)

that alone would have pretty much guaranteed a better President in 2000 and 2004 electrons.

Don’t be so negative.

Damn auto correct.

Okay. I'll be more positive and include Canadians in our elections.

It was a joke on your typo.
7 days ago - Wednesday 10/10/18 - 9:33:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I caught it and realized the error. Just playing along.
But to think of it, how can this country possibly have faith in a political process that yields trump as president?

The electoral college was straight up supposed to be the last defense against that. Federalist 68, I want to say.

I'm not even involved in the thread and you take a shot at me?

Is there a rule that you have to be actively participating in a thread to be mentioned in it?

Nah.
7 days ago - Wednesday 10/10/18 - 11:31:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm sure there's no rule,,,

It just seems more polite to attack someone to their face instead of sniping at them behind their back.

Lol, it's an open forum, I doubt anybody assumed it was behind your back.

If I'm not posting or monitoring the thread, then it's only by chance I would stumble upon it. If I'm participating in the thread, then he knows I'm here...

As if there would be a news thread you wouldn't come into.
