'I’m not just saying thank you to anybody for nothing,' Mr Ball says

The father of a basketball player recently released from jail in China has refused to thank Donald Trump for his role in securing the release, despite the President’s repeated attacks on Twitter.

UCLA basketball player LiAngelo Ball and two teammates were arrested in China earlier this month, after shoplifting from stores in Shanghai before the team’s season opener. The three men were released after admitting to their crimes, according to school officials.

Mr Trump later claimed that he, too, had a hand in securing the boy’s release, saying he personally asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to look into the issue.

So first off, LaVar Ball loves attention about as much as Trump does, and is equally willing to say outlandish things to get it.

That said, the Trump statements (tweets) on this are ridiculous, and I'd be mad if I were the parents, too.
Getting Americans out of jail in a non-democratic country is something the president (or State Dept.) should do because it's right, not because they want to be given public credit for it. It's a terrible, petty look for Trump to say what he said, and act how he has.

He owns a sports apparel line.
His son was jacking other companies sports apparel overseas.
That’s all you need to know.

Oh that guy. I remember him. That was pretty awkward. Sound like

Good job pops.

This guy is a moron. Most of the time, if an American is caught breaking the law in China, they're stuck in Chinese prison. Most Americans don't get bailed out by our government. This kid was lucky and the dad is a moron.

They actually stole from the Louis Vuitton store. I think it was a pair of $700 sunglasses.

Anyway, it was a dumb thing for a bunch of 18/19-year-old guys to do, but the penalty for shoplifting in China is harsh (5-10 years).

I mean he is a ridiculous guy. But that doesn't make Trump's dumb tweets any better. He acted like a child because he didn't get enough public credit for this.

Yeah, Trump's reaction to the dad is childish. But I'm more appalled by the dad in this situation. I'm no Trump fan by any means, but if Trump bailed my kid out of Chinese prison and got him home, I'd be worshipping the ground he walks on. I just can't imagine being such a piece of shxt as this dad is.

And yeah, China's punishments rarely fit the crime.

Both acting like children. Asking for praise is silly, especially when you already got it from the person you helped.

Government service is often thankless work, not for those with fragile egos.

That said trump stepping in is one of the very few good actions I believe he’s done.

If it was delivered by USPS, a long sentence. If it was delivered by UPS/FedEx, not nearly as long.

It’s two different crimes, and they aren’t really comparable.

Yeah do NOT f*ck with the U.S. Mail. Or a mailbox. Unless you just enjoy being charged with federal crimes.

Does that mean no mailbox baseball?

My neighbors and my family used to paint each other's mailboxes as pranks. He works for USPS. That coulda been the scandal of the century, I tell ya...

Yeah. Mailboxes are considered federal property. That's true even if you buy a mailbox yourself with your own money, and put it out at the road. So mailbox baseball isn't just destruction of someone's personal property - it's destruction of federal property. Which is a big freakin' deal, if they decide to throw the book at you.

Our neighbors are super Catholic. Like, they worry about our souls because we're liberal. Anyway, one of their kids knocked his girlfriend up before marriage, which was quite the scandal to them. So my dad painted "Grandma and Grandpa" on their mailbox. That was payback for the year they fake sold out house while we were on vacation.

Nah, you can paint your own mailbox (people do all the time). If everybody's in on it and it really is just a joke between neighbors (and it doesn't interfere with the delivery of the mail in any way), no authority would ever get involved.

This is hilarious. Your family's relationship with neighbors sounds awesome.

Why does that happen so often with Catholic kids? Like, if you're going to break the rule about sex before marriage, go ahead and break the birth control rule too.

It's just common sense!
