This is where the personal contact comes into play. Everyone knows lots of hetero men and have formed an opinion of the norm. The people we are talking about likely have contact with very few gay people, and are still forming an opinion about what is the norm.

When one knows lots of hetero men that aren't like Weinstein, they aren't going to change their opinion of hetero men. When they know one gay man that isn't like Spacey. it's not so easy to keep that positive opinion.

The thing is if they weren't seeking to reinforce the negative prejudice then they would think he was a creep point blank. Not that he was a creep because he's gay.

Like you and I don't think that, right? Because we don't have the negative prejudice in our heads.

Those aren't the people that are needed in order to keep the trend of gay acceptance moving forward- - they are already on board.

When we talk about 'setting back gay people', we must consider those who have those negative prejudices in their heads, along with positive opinions of gay people. They are the ones that are going to define the direction of gay acceptance in society. They aren't necessarily looking only to reinforce their negative opinions- - many are looking for ways to be more accepting. If they abandon the negative and move toward the positive, gay people move forward. If the negative is reinforced (which I believe is what Spacey has done), it sets back gay people.

Perhaps we shouldn't let bigoted people hold very much value in what is accepted in our society.

I think as many people will see the pointlessness in Spacey's coming out as would attach any negative feelings towards gays in general. For Spacey, this is all about him.

Oh yeah I assaulted some kid but whilre I'm being honest about it, I happen to be gay too. Most people will see that an an apaulling lack of judgement.

Seems like a rather divisive approach, much like making the assumption that people are just looking for more reasons to continue their hate rather than assuming that they are looking for more reasons to stop hating...

It's extremely ironic that you should criticise anyone else for being divisive.

He didn't really. His attempt to excuse predation on a minor fell on deaf ears.

a lot of my gay friends complained that he would use that sort of excuse. being gay is still not accepted in quite a few places around the world, and that just gave fuel to the "gays molest kids" crowd, but i don't expect that sort of attitude to change overnight.
