The suspect in the Manhattan truck attack, a 29-year-old man, crashed his truck and then was shot by police in the abdomen, New York Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill said. O'Neill said the suspect "did make a statement" after the crash, which led police to declare the incident an act of terrorism.

It was the statement
That’s what made them declare it

Let me guess what the statement was

He apparently didn't even have a real gun.
22 days ago - Tuesday 10/31/17 - 6:16:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
And he killed real people?
Imagine that

Only a terrorist would need them things, trying to sneak up on pedestrians and sh*t!

That was clever.

Luckily this guy didn't hit anything near the numbers of Mr Vegas. Needs more double kills.

Also, rip.

So…republicans want this guy declared an "enemy combatant," and put in military detention.

He is a lawful permanent resident of the US. Doing this would deprive him of his right to an attorney, among other things (Miranda rights, etc.). Trump apparently wants him sent to Guantanamo (I don't think they will actually do this).

Indefinite military detention for legal US residents who are arrested on US soil and accused of crimes committed in the US. The future the GOP wants.

Btw, we have never, in any instance of domestic terrorism where the suspect wasn't killed, failed to return a guilty verdict and a sentence of either life improsonment or the death penalty (depending on which applied). The judicial system absolutely 100% works in these cases, yet Trump spent part of his speech today talking about what a "joke and a laughingstock" it was.

He's expected to do some political posturing and grandstanding, isn't he? Particularly after the Lefties made claims about immigrants never being responsible for any actual terror attacks...

Funny how after the shooting in Vegas policy discussions were seen as "politicizing a tragedy" but now that the perpetrator says "Allahu akbar", it's a very different tune.

First of all, no. He *could* be the president, and not make defamatory and inaccurate statements about the American judicial system.

Second, the claim was that no *refugees* had committed acts of terror, which is true. I don't believe anyone made the claim that no *immigrants* had. A few major news stories from the past 5-10 years would clearly show that isn't true. Perhaps you've heard of the Boston marathon bombing?

Depends how they parse the claim, doesn't it? I think those pushing against Trump's 'Muslim' ban framed it in terms of 'immigrants' rather than 'refugees'...

Your thought is incorrect.

Also, none of that is really relevant to the fact that the administration (and so-called "moderate Republicans" in congress) are calling for a lawful permanent resident to be sent to military detention, declared an enemy combatant, and denied his right to an attorney.

Do permanent residents have all the rights of a US Citizen as far as being declared an enemy combatant? I recall it being debated for Taliban John, and I thought it was his status as a US Citizen that saved him from the military court system.

Doesn’t declaring him enemy combatant gives Daesh some territorial legitimacy?
